New requests for cobia comments for 2017

I thought Cobia was closed for the year but i believe this is new.

If it keeps the little guys in the water and the big guys in my ice box it sounds like a great idea. I’ll agree to just about anything to keep the season open!
I’m guessing the state waters are still going to be hitting them pretty hard though.

My 2cts worth was added to comments on that link. My biggest gripe is that we rec fishers always take the brunt of the restrictions while comm
boats seldom get shut down… IMO a dead cobia is just as dead and isn’t gonna be making little ones for the future ;; doesn’t matter if it was harvested by a rec OR</font id=“size6”></font id=“red”> comm vessel… If they close it for one</font id=“red”>,then close it for all</font id=“red”>!!in both fed and state waters until stock replenishes itself.
Regs should be same for both , one per person , 36"fl , max 3 per boat , w/ seasonal limit of 3 per person

Gail Wins, just so you better understand their thought process across the board… The Commercial sector reports and shows record of 99% of the fish they harvest. The fisheries managers can track the total harvested weight far easier with this consistent data. They have put the burden of tracking the recreational harvest on the recreational anglers to suggest the best method for tracking/record number of fish harvested. Very few recreational fisherman care to inform the govt or anyone what they actually harvest. At this point the govt should have easily come up with an enforceable method of tracking recreational fish harvest. The distrust btn rec sector and govt has deepened this separation of information. Hopefully we can resolve this issue because going forward this continues to cause more and more problems. I hope this helps for you

Tag the fish like gators… you get caught without…bring the pain. Pay a small/big fee for each tag and you could build Disney world offshore with the money…WIN-WIN…

I think enforcement is the problem. The DNR and fisheries management only have so many man hours to check catches. If the penalties were too severe, I think you’d have a lot of ‘filet and release’ at sea with the meat being well hidden to avoid an inspection.
I guess it’s similar to the red snapper situation though, in that the people who care about the fishery need to police themselves.
One crazy idea is to have a ‘fish sniffing dog’ at each marina/ramp that can identify different species by smell. Yes, that’s maybe a little big brotherish, but if the penalties were severe enough and chances of being caught high enough, it would have an impact.
But, I do agree that all these regulations impact the rec fishermen much more than the commercial guys how fair that is is questions. But more importantly, how that impacts the health of the fishery is even more important.

F&B ; I don’t disagree at all that the comm.side reports are more helpful in managing the resource and that more enforcement is needed. IMO DNR needs to put more sting into penalty , but as i said earlier, dead is dead regardless of who killed it, therefor to salvage the fishery ; closed to one is closed to,all with VERY severe penalty for violators on both sides the isle… All i suggest is that everyone be treated equally and fairly !!! If fairness and equal is the norm then the distrust between sides might not be as wide…:smiley:

Gail Wins, if it was all “equally and fairly”, the commercial ACL and recreational ACL would be split 50-50. Instead the recreational sector gets about 90% of the cobia quota, while the commercial sector gets about 10%. Regarding “closed for one, closed for all”, be careful what you wish for, as you may loose your recreational catch of red drum, as it’s been closed to commercial harvest for around 30 years.

BB; Can’t , won’t , don’t intend to argue #'s about anything because I don’t usually believe any of them , numbers can and in most of cases are skewed to portray someones agenda… But for the sake of argument lets assume your listed numbers are correct and the comm guys are on the short end making it unfair to them… This situation just re-enforces my argument that, close for one, close for all, is the only fair way to treat and solve this problem!! There is only one loser in this dog fight imo,and it’s the fishery if not resolved. Taking from either to give to either; favoring one over the other; setting different rules to benefit
either over the other imo is just not right nor fair!!!:frowning_face::frowning_face:

How you gonna have dogs sniffing out fish at private docks and multiple boat ramps…? That’s crazy talk. This just outlines how stupid and impossible it us to enforce these laws. Also…with Trump in charge you think he would pay for drones to spy on fishermen. .? I am seeing his impact first hand. I’m in construction and for the FIRST TIME EVER…!! I have seen ICE/Homeland Security SUV’s around construction heavy areas.

It wouldn't be a problem to put DNR and dogs at marinas and boat ramps, private docks is another matter. They figured out a way to make it work at our airports.....
