Well, I have half a fly rod outfit. I just bought a Winston 9’ 8wt Boron rod. Now I have to get a reel and I will be in business. Anybody have any thoughts on St Croix reels? I know where I can get a pretty good deal on one, I just don’t know anything about them. I do know they make good rods. Ready to enter into the “Reds on Fly” club.

Hey Roger If your looking for a cheap reel…I have a older Sage reel, It does not really have a drag system just a rim for Palming.
I dont know much about St Croix reels. Its hard to beat a Winston rod Im sure you will enjoy it…Did you get to Test cast it? If you wanna spend more money go for a Ross or Lamson
You have a top rod so if you want to match with a top reel get a Tibor Everglades, Abel, or Islander. If you want to spend less, look at Waterworks/Lamson. The lite speed and the velocity are good reels at about half a Tibor.
If you think you will be buying other Wt rods like a 10 or 12…and want a nice reel… go with the Abel super 8. You can swap spools from there big game reel. So one super 8 reel with a spare big game spool #3 will give you the options of fishing 8 -12 wt lines. Its alot of dough but keeps you from having to buy more reels. Check out the Abel web site it explains it alot better than I can.
I own a Lamson, Bauer, and several Tibors. Lamson will work for you, just might not hold up more than a couple of years. Depends on how hard on them you are. Baeur makes a great reel, no complaints yet. But I say, spend the money on a Tibor. No better reel on the planet. Low maintenance, and work horses. If you ever want to sell it, you can bet it will retain some value.
Just my $0.02

Every serious fly fisher I know either has one or really wants one. After breaking my rod recently I have decided to upgrade and this will include a Tibor Everglades. If you spend the money you will never have to buy another reel.
