I think we all knew it was coming, I don’t see an issue with it using large breed hunting dogs. Gonna suck for the guys using small beagles on 200 acre family tracks. I think there should be a provision for it other than having to fence in the entire property. Let’s hope all the still hunters keep the population down. I see more depredation permits for many.
Looks like someone could make some weekend money wrangling up lost hounds. Owner has to pay $50 a head for all dogs caught by someone else.
We’ll see if the Governor signs it this year.
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
Notwithstanding another provision of law, hunting deer with a dog is unlawful on a tract of land that contains less than one thousand contiguous acres unless the property is enclosed by a fence capable of enclosing dogs used for deer hunting. A person who violates this subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one thousand dollars."
In order to reclaim the dog the owner or his agent must:
(1) acknowledge ownership of the dog;
(2) pay the person restraining the dog fifty dollars; and
(3) furnish to the person restraining the dog the owner’s name and address, and identify the property from which the dog originated…
If someone’s hunting dog ends up at my place I’m certainly not going to expect to be paid if the owner shows up. Hopefully this regulation has a positive side, maybe someone who finds a dog on their property will want to get $50 rather than possibly destroying an innocent dog.
Has this been proposed or has it passed the house and senate and waiting for governors signature? Doubt this stands a snowballs chance in you know where of passing. Reforms definitely need to made but the houndsmen will fight tooth and nail to keep it as it is.

If I recover anyone’s dog the wife is going to give it a full belly of food and I’ll never take any money for giving it back to its owner.
I’m assuming this is just to push dog owners to be more proactive and responsible.
Since dog hunters have been putting dogs on one side of my property and standing on the other side for a long time, I love this law. I will pay people $100 to catch the dogs so that the dog owner will have to dish out $50.
Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.

It should weed out all the jack legs doing what you described. I’d also like an addition that any active standers need to be 100 yards from a public road. Too much traffic today, and you never know how deer fever will affect some hunters and their ability to hold off a shot do to traffic.

Fred has it passed or I st proposed? Figured you should know since you posted
It was introduced in 2010 and made some headway in 2017. Catching a lot of negative support. Many seem to think 1000 is too much land, but to squelch that argument there is a clause for running dogs on property fenced in. A cattle fence will stop most all dogs but not harm deer migration.
I don’t want to see dog hunting banned, but I’m wore out having to deal with so many “outlaw” hunters and the lame excuse that the dog doesn’t know the property line. We still have several great hunt clubs on 1000+ acre tracks. With the buy out of MeadWestvaco and the wholesale development going on in S.C., Who knows how much longer that will last?

the 1000 contiguous acres makes sense… but pitting you against an angry dog hunter/owner to get paid $50 is stupid. Most will just threaten to kick your ass if you don’t give up the dog. Then getting the other info is like having you confront the owner and do their job for them.
If it passes, great. The $50 will severely cut into the doggers budget, and soon dog driving will be gone. That $50 is necessary to keep the doggers fueled with honey buns and Mountain Dew, they buy that before gas for the vehicle, and feed for the hound. No sugar, acid, and caffeine for them fellas, they’ll fold just like a Chinese fan.

This is likely the funniest thing you have said on CF.com. I’m giving you props for this one. Honey buns have been a trademark of dog hunting since the dawn of time…
