Just got a new set up today and was hoping it would work well for a little jigging and trolling for kings or cobia fishing along with bottom bumping. I got a 7’ Ugly Stik Heavy action rod w/ a Penn 750 ssm spinning real. I put 300 yards of 30lb Power Pro Braid on it. I know the 7’ rod isn’t best for jigging but it is pretty stiff still. What’s the ideas? Now between rod/reel and line I was around $220 which was my budget so wasn’t like I had a lot more $ to spend when I don’t get offshore but maybe a cpl times a year.

Well, if you only get offshore a few time a year why do you tell everyone how to fish? Did you learn from a magazine? You finally figured out you dont know 10% of what you think you do?

Thinking more like “once every couple of years” would be closer to the truth…

Thank you! Finally someone has said it. I only get offshhore maybe 10-12 times a year-which is why I NEVER tell anyone how to fish in the Offshore section, or even the inshore. At least this thread/topic is a good question, and hope you get good answers. But take people advice, and stop posting tips on how to fish offshore if you don’t even know if this setup is good to troll/bottomfish!
I have bottom fished with several different types of rods/reels from a crappy Quantum Great White reel, to Penn 8500’s to Senator 6/0. They all brought in fish, maybe not the easiest way, but if you got line, reel, drag, and a pole, you might bring in fish, just not the best way. Good Luck with the setup.

Not sure about how well it would work. My guess is over time it may not hold up. But I will tell you that 220 at a local tackle shop is all you need to get a bottom rod and reel combo all set up. I reccomend Atlantic Game and Tackle.
For 20$ more could have gotten a sweet okuma cedros combo setup. i bought one after i was told about them and have jigged, trolled and bottom fished it. and it weights about half bout what ur setup does. should do some diggin first before opening wallet. if u didnt have such a bad wrap more people would help ya. i message people all the time with questions and to be honest with ya alot of people will help u out with more info than u think.
