God it looks like those two fish are obviously not snowies.

How many 30+ lb Snowies have you seen? Large snowies lose their spots. I guess you were able to count the spines on the dorsal fin in the pictures (10 Warsaw / 11 Snowy) other than that, they look identical. look at the new state record snowie from Va…looks identical to what S4G brought in.

So it is a snowie?

Larger snowies tend to lose their spots. Although fish with white spots in vertical bar formations are a dead give away that the fish is a snowy, you can’t say that it’s not a snowy just because it doesn’t have spots. From the SAFMC “Larger snowy groupers usually lose the white spots and caudal saddle and become dark brown with a slight coppery tint”. As far as the number of dorsal spines, most groupers have 11 and the warsaw has 10. However, in the fish id section of this website, the pictures supplied by DNR indicate that snowies can occasionally have 10 dorsal spines. I don’t know if that is correct, but that is what SCDNR says. That’s why it’s typically important to look at multiple characteristics to get a definitive answer. The other thing about this is that you can’t trust half of the pictures on the internet, because they misidentify them as readily as anyone. I think that in this case, you have to look at the LENGTH of the SECOND and THIRD dorsal spine. In a snowy, they will be roughly the same length (maybe not exactly though). In the warsaw, the SECOND spine is significantly longer than the third. From the picures that I have seen, because it is taller, usually makes it thicker as well. Most of the easily idenfiable warsaws that I could find, the SECOND dorsal was about 40-60% longer. It’s not something that you have to squint to see. It stands out as long as the spines aren’t laying flat against the body. I should also point out that if you search the internet, you will see some warsaws where the SECOND AND THIRD spine are close in size but much larger than the 4th on back. Regardless, you will notice something quite funny about the first few dorsal spines on the warsaw.

That being said, as S4G mentioned, their biggest grouper of the day (previously thought to be a state record snowy) is a warsaw grouper, in which they are legally entitled to keep. I also saw some of the other previously posted pictures and can verify with 100% confidence that they had several snowies (you could e

I’m also starting to wonder if they have ever identified any hybrid species. If you take a trip on the internet, you can definitely see some fish that will make you question the species.

For the record guys the fish in his left hand is a snowy grouper!

Technique yes, numbers no. I have a tremendous amount of respect for JW and Captain Ed. Their numbers were not volunteered to me nor did I ask. I did get the numbers from someone on this site. They know who they are and they were the first person I called once we got home to thank them for the hook up. If they want to identify themselves they can.

I got a picture from pross that cleaned the fish tonight with a zoomed in shot of the peck fins.

Here is the carcass of the fish in pross’s left hand in picture above posted by sellsfish.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

11 dorsal spines in the carcass picture = snowy…

Just had dinner with the current snowy record holder and confirmed where that fish came from. With everybody doing some deep dropping I don’t think it will be long before that record will be broken.

Maybe you have not seem Amendment 17B which completely shuts down bottom fishing seaward of 240'. I think that his record will be safe...

Great job, you’re making it look easy and its anything but. I’ve bottom fished the ledge a few times recently (175’ plus) and if there’s current and or wind its tough. Didn’t notice any electric reels, which makes it even harder. Look forward to more state record posts by you.

We caught 13 snowies on one trip over the summer, a few in the 15-20 lb range and all had spots. I’m not an expert tho I sell lumber not fish. And yes we had that many people on the boat to make it legal.

at least we are not talking about trapping cats!

Heck no! I got money stacked up like pancakes!
:smiley::smiley:

And if you believe that I got some beach front property in Arizona for ya! We left Manning 4:30am sunday morning, got home around 9pm that night, knocked the salt off the rods and boat and I headed back to the upstate for my 8am meeting monday morning. Got home at 12:45 in bed at 1:15am and at work on time. The rest of the crew live in Manning but had to work Monday as well so the fish cleaning took place Monday night along with the rest of the boat cleaning. Since I could not help I donated my fish share to the rest of the crew minus a bad of wahoo fillets that I talked them into giving me before I left. My dad loves grouper and did not seem to complain to much about my deal.

And now you know the rest of the story.

You are correct it is NOT easy!!! We don’t have electrics so we did it the ole fashion way. I think it was Clint Eastwood that said “Life is hard but it is even harder when you are stupid.”

Only thing we had going for us was a cute cranker.

When is this going into effect?? This really pisses me off. We have a GREAT fishery. Maybe I should invite some of these yahoos along and let them hand crank in a few drops. We could discuss the fishery while their arms burned and they begged for mercy!

Dont believe a glue trap will catch that cat!
