new sonar/downscan recommendations

Looking to upgrade the unit on my boat. I fish mostly rivers/harbor/jetties, including deep hole shrimping in the fall. Right now I’m trying to decide between the Lowrance Hook, Humminbird Helix, or Raymarine Dragonfly series. Probably something in the 5-7" screen. Wondering if anyone has any recommendations of one over the others, or something different altogether with downscan capabilities in the 300-500 price point?

I’m a Humminbird guy so I’d recommend the Helix series. I’m sure everyone else is going to tell you whatever they’re using is the “best” and the rest is “crap.” I’ve had no issue with my Helix 7 or my Helix 5. Mine are the older Gen 1 models but I hear the new Gen 2 models are bettter. One recommendation I would suggest, regardless of which brand you go with, is get the largest screen you can afford. I’m currently running the Helix 5 gps/sonar at the console and the Helix 7 si/gps (also has di and traditional sonar) on the bow but I’m going to put the 7 on the console and get a Helix 9 for the bow.

God bless the “ignore” function.

Humminbird all day IMO. Had a helix 5 on my old boat and did a lot of deep hole shrimping. My friend had a lowrance and I would be marking shrimp when he wasn’t. Swapped to lowrance after a wire shorting out and wasn’t happy. Recently upgraded boats and went back to humminbird

I would check out the dragonfly series by Raymarine. The 7" is bad to the bone. Clear picture and very user friendly. If you ever wanted to upgrade in the future, also look into the a series, es series, and the axiom. Definitely game changers.

Personally, I’m neither a Humminbird fan (been there and done that) nor a basher. There are plenty of other options out there…
