Thinking about pulling boards and down rods on sunday and want to break away from the crowd and usual Ramp 4 area. Anybody catching fish on boards other than Acapulco to Blacks/Clouds? I was wondering with all the rain and muddy water if fish have moved into Crystal Lake yet or at all. That was one thought or going way up the river to shallow water. Feel free to PM or text 803-917-3726 if you don’t want your info out there.
i know it’s crazy, but yesterday i was just floating around, cleaning my boat up, and marked two huge schools of something at the water treatment plant on the lexington side near the dam. it was in 30-40 feet of water. they were large marks, looked just like striper, but it would be odd for them to be down there. when i pulled out to head home, there were ACRES of birds floating around the big water. they went on as far as i could see with sun going down. i actually had to come off plane because i was surrounded by them and didnt want to hit a bunch of them.
Not all that unusual. It was January 2011 when I won a tournament fishing the deep water around Susie Ibert Island with downrods and freelines. We just had a big snow event with extreme cold, and the water temps upriver plummeted into the high 30’s. I figured the best shot at success was to find the warmest water and fish small bait. In Ballentine, the temps were in the upper 40’s to 50. On the shady banks, there was still snow cover. No one else had more than 1 keeper; so I guessed right. The next week, the temperatures moderated and those fish were gone… They do swim.
Fogman, Sent you a PM. If I remember correctly, the area around Susie Ebert had some nice stripers last winter too. The ones we caught hit mostly small spoons while we were perch fishing with your Dad. That was a fun day!
I love these threads. Nothing is odd about catching striper ANYWHERE on the lake in the winter.
I used to anchor on off from shull island in 80’ of water year round and fish downrods blind. (And we caught fish) I only knew it was 80’ deep by the knots on the anchor rope. We used to drop and Redrop till we hit that 80’…lol…that was long time ago. I stopped fishing for a long time after that.
When i started fishing again, i didnt have a clue where to go. So i fished jakes YEAR Round. I caught fish yr round there. There are herring at the towers almost year round.
Fish can be caught all over the lake especially in the winter.
There has been more money won during tx’s inbetween buffalo and bear, than ANY other part of the lake. You can take that to the bank…and all your big money tx’s are during cold weather months.
They sure didn’t bite well for us yesterday. It was my worst day in quite some time. We only had 5 bites with one 23 incher and 2 others that were a stretch to get 21 that we let swim. We did have one good fish pull the hook that would have made the day, but talk about slow fishing.
It was tough for me last Friday. Had a few bites but no takers. I wasn’t able to get there until noon but did manage a nice blue cat though. I’ll go pre-fish Friday and hope for they are in the spot that has done well for me but who knows.
My Striper boat is only 17’. Just wondering if anyone has had success. 10 years ago I remember a lot of the MSC members talking about catching good fish up there.
