Was talking with the president of the CHSC last night and he told me there was a new pending SC saltwater record. Said DNR was disputing the catch because the guy was a commercial fisherman, even though it was caught on hook & line. The striper was over 66 lbs. That breaks the old SW record by about 20 lbs. Anyone heard anything about this? I’m still trying to dig up more info and will post as I find it.
I haven’t heard of this but why would it matter if he commercially fishes. If they doubt his story have him take a lie detector. Thats a heck of a fish if true.
OK, just got the “reel” scoop. Reports say he was fishing off the NC coast but weighed the fish in VA. Sorry for the mis-information. There is a pic but I cant link it to this site.
RECORD STRIPER WASN’T A RECORD
When is a commercial fisherman fishing for money and when is he fishing for fun? That is at the heart of a controversy over a 66-pound, 8-ounce striped bass caught by Alvin Wimbrough last week.
The weight of the fish easily tops the current Virginia record of 63 pounds, 8-ounces, but Wimbrough, of Virginia Beach, has been denied record status because he is a commercial fisherman. Rules of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament prohibit commercial hook-and-line fishermen from participating in the program.
Wimbrough swears he was fishing for fun. He and a group of friends ware aboard Capt. Paul Ewing’s charter boat, Fishing Fever. They were reported to be off Sandbridge.
Claude Bain, the tournament director, was adamant about the rule. “We can’t get into the mind of a commercial fisherman when they go out on a trip,” he said. The rules, he said, were designed to keep a commercial fisherman from catching a big fish then saying he wasn’t fishing for money.
“This was a charter trip,” Wimbrough told the Virginian-Pilot.

You mean it didn’t come out of Greenwood?Robert, when do they open the gates on the dam? Thinking about fishing in the river…
We’re catching some nice white bass out by the sp. Around striper ridge.
If it smells like fresh fish, your’re in the right place
Mark.
Mark, the gates are (slightly)open 24/7 for the minimum flow. Only when its rains here or upstate do they really open them up but stripes are doing pretty good behind the dam right now. Bucktails fished under a clear cork(1/2 full of water)
How bout them crappie? Been hearing good reports but hav’nt been myself. Was headed to the Hill this morning but trailer problems arose.

My neighbor’s been doing real well fishing a light green grub around the docks, I haven’t seen a lot of people catching them trolling, really hasn’t been a lot of people trolling (not like previous years).I guess the gas prices are keeping more at home, myself included:roll_eyes:
