New t-top advice

I know many of you guys have been through what I’m about to do, so I’m looking for some advice before I get too deep. I have a 2006 Mckee Craft 184 Marathon with a DF140 Suzuki. I am looking at possibly installing a T-Top as I currentl only have a bimini top and it’s a pain to fish around. What in your opinions are some reputable dealers or options that I should look at before I make my decision. I am looking for the basics, t-top, electronics box, ect. Thanks for your help!

Tiger,
Do a search on this topic. I bet I have seen a dozen different questions answered in the last year. Most have been good. You can probably get all you need.

Same as Pluffdaddy… we just had this topic.
I’ll put mine back up there again because I love it. It was made by Commercial Towers out of Monroe, NC. I love it. Look at my posts and you’ll find a discussion about 2 weeks ago about it, includes a pic of mine on a 18’ Proline bay boat.

btodag I’m looking into commercial boat towers
, I like their price and product, just wondering how the installation went on yours. Did they install it or did someone locally do it?

X2 on Commercial Boat Towers. I did some research on them and was overall pleased with what I found. Haven’t purchased yet, but looked good.

Take a look at our T-Topless … the McKee Marathon’s rails are built like a tank and the top folds down to go in the garage (or remove for cool days).

I looked at them, but I need an electronics box so I don’t have my vhf mounted on the dash taking up all the space.

If your McKee’s rails are tall enough (they look very tall), we have the
SSI e-box below that we’ve been contemplating installing in the T-Topless:

SSI radio/storage box with speaker locations
http://www.ssicustomplastics.com/overhead.htm
SSI No 691-GRD4430-00

Outside dimensions - 34 5/8"W x 19"D x 7 3/4"H
Inside dimensions - 32 1/2"W x 15"D x 7 1/4"H

  • Heavy duty full width acrylic door with a gasket, push-button lock with stainless steel locking slam latch
  • Sturdy acrylic capped ABS
  • Stainless steel piano hinge and gas ram door support
  • The full-width door covers stereo on the port side with 5/8" clearance for radio bezel and the starboard storage area

Its a little big (we’re looking at some smaller boxes as well).

What do you think?

Thanks, Captain Ross

I don’t need a radio, and how are you going to power it with it still being removable. I like the Idea, but its just not what I need in this situation. Plug and play would be nice, especially something quality built as yours, but that’s not what I want. If I had a small skiff then I would definitely go that route.

The T-Topless already comes with a nav light, which has the wiring inside the leg.
It has splash-proof snap plugs on the end to unplug for removal.
We would do the same thing with the e-box.
We liked this one because the speakers and everything are in the box, so only need power
to the box (no speakers wires down, so its clean).

I understand - its not for you - even with a smaller box.

Just thought I’d offer the option … thanks for looking.

Sorry, took me a while to reply. Installation was good. I think my turnaround was less than a week. The only issue I had was they didn’t clean the fiberglass dust up from in the boat and under the console. A bit sloppy for such a beautiful piece of work otherwise. Also, my ebox had a white scuff on the black trim around the door. A magic eraser was the first thing I used on it and it completely went away. The top is awesome and I would do it all over again, in fact I will probably have them put a hardtop on my newer sea hunt escape dual console in the spring. Have already been in talks with them about it.
