Hey guys new to the area, just bought a skeeter 210sx and looking for any advice heading down cooler river area and inshore / nearshore.
I was in Miami for a hot minute, ran my Carolina skiff 21 for about 7 years mostly reef and bay fishing, so I’m a bit new to reds trout and flounder. But I was looking for a good resource to learn more about the area. If anyone has any recommendations for baits and rigs let me know!
So saltwater and fresh water are very different fisheries here, but you can certainly do both. And in the same day if you want to. What are you looking to target most? What area are you staying in to help us point you in the right direction?
Skeeters can be used in salt, but that Carolina Skiff you had is an ideal boat for most inshore fishing here. Our harbor here, it isn’t uncommon to get some very choppy afternoons. I wouldn’t want to be on a low gunnel boat on those days there. The rivers and lakes are fine of course. In my head I’m thinking skeeter is a very flat bass boat, but I’m not sure exactly what you have.
I looked up your boat, that’s a fine boat here. You can fish the freshwater lakes or go hit the jetties or even the near shore reefs on calm days. The jetties are excellent fishing, just depends on what you’re after.
The best thing you can do to flatten the learning curve is hire a guide for the day.
Capt Buddy that posts here daily would be a good place to start.
The search function here will answer almost any questions you might have, and a look thru past inshore reports will tell you what fish are the most active when and what time of year.
It sounds like you already fish some, so the day trip with Capt Buddy will cut months and months off your “figuring it out alone” will ever do.
I’m up by chicken creek on the river. I’d like to head south and hit some reds and trout, flounder would be awesome too. I have rods and reels for inshore, I’m not a big bass fisherman so I’ll spend most of my time heading down the river.
Great idea, I was lucky enough in Florida to have a good friend of mine who is a guide hook me up down there. It seems pretty straight forward down here not much different than hitting the flats in Biscayne bay.
I had to look up Chicken creek. Yeah you’re a ways away from most of us. I’m not familiar with that area. I know there’s some good fishing to be had around Mcclelanville, but that’s out of my swim lane.
EF gave some good advice. Hire a guide in your area and it’ll cut that learning curve down tremendously.
Yeah, it’s way different. There are no snook, tarpon, permit, bonefish, or barracuda that are cruising our flats generally.
There are a few snook around, but none really to speak of. Mostly I hear of shyster type chintzy guides taking dumbass n00bs night fishing and sticking a gig in one by chance every now and again, , sad indeed but true.
Anyway, it’s different. Not like night and day, but like December and May.
