I just recently moved down to Charleston and have never really fished salt water. I have heard all about the redfish down here and really want to fish in the marshes for them. I don’t have a boat and was wondering if there are any marsh areas that have redfish that are accessible without a boat? Also, what is good bait to use? I look forward to hearing back and getting out on the water!
Thank you
In my opinion the best way to fish on shore is to first go to a pier and fish. There are several piers in the area. Talk to the people, make some fishing friends. Some of these people will help you with rigs and baits. There are some YouTube videos by Jiggin Jerry that are worth watching. The baits they use at the pier are the same baits you will use in other places.
Most of my success have been with bottom or near bottom rigs. Drop shot rigs and Carolina rigs are very popular. Jiggin is another popular method. Fish hang out by oyster bars, creek mouths and structure. Structure like piers.
You have to be careful not to get your rigs caught up in the grass and oyster bars. They will eat up a lot of your rigs.
A lot of people use a bobber setup to float just above the bottom and avoid the oyster bars.
Baits: Crab, Shrimp, Mud minnows and cut bait. I like the Gulp scented baits. Shrimp and crab Gulp baits.
If you go into the marshes watch out for the Jiggers. Wear some protection.
Breach Inlet, and Fort Moultrie along the rocks are a coupla options.
