New to fishing

Hey guys I just started fishing and know very little but have been learning a lot. I don’t have a boat so that kind of limits me. Do any of you have any suggestions on great places to fish without a boat? thanks

I have been fishing for a long time but not much saltwater fishing and never fished in South Carolina. I am in Mount Pleasant. I have fished the surf in Florida a bit but I have no idea where to fish anywhere else around the area. Any suggestions of locations and rigs to get a beginner started?

Mt. Pleasant fishing pier or Pitt St. Bridge.

Mt. Pleaseant waterfront park.
North Charleston Riverfront Park.
Plymouth Park on James Island.
Under any bridge you can get access to.
Breach Inlet on IOP
Ft. Moultrie on Sullivans
North end of Folly Beach
West Ashley Park
Folly Beach Fishing Pier
Cosgrove Bridge in West Ashley

Download Google Earth, do some research, and pound the ground. I rarely fish any of the places above. I keep my “fishing from land” spots to myself.

What kind of rigs do most use? I have used a only mullet and shrimp with a fish finder and pyramid weight. What types of artificial lures work well. I am looking for reds, trout, and flounder. Anything else that bites is a plus. Thanks again.

Mud minnow on a jig head will catch all three species you’re after.
I’ve been having some success on a trick worm (including Trout Trick) rigged “shakey head” style on a jig head.
When I used to surf fish a lot I would just use a 2/0 hook on a Carolina rig with a piece of frozen shrimp and whatever size pyramid anchor the conditions call for. I like surf fishing as the tide goes out. My favorite place to surf fish is anywhere on the Isle of Palms. There is nothing like pulling a 4` shark out of the water in the summertime and watching all the tourists yell at their kids to get out of the water!
You probably aren’t going to find any flounder right now, but according to some reports I’ve seen on this site they’re still around in some secret spots.
Good luck!

Haha. We used to do that in Florida all the time. Little do they know their kids have been swimming with the sharks all day.

How far up the rivers, such as the Wando, does the water stay salt. In otherwords, how far up the river can you still catch saltwater fish.

That depends on how much rain we’ve had and how hard the tides are moving. I’ve only fished in a kayak in the Wando, but it’s salty up around the Big Paradise Island boat ramp. There have been some folks bank fishing every time I’ve been there, and I saw redfish upstream from there every time I fished above there. I didn’t catch any, but I did see them.
As for the Cooper, I’ve always heard that Santee Cooper always releases enough water to keep the salt from getting up past Dupont.
As far as the Ashley, I don’t know. I’ve lived on the Ashley, but I never tried to catch saltwater fish from it. That was always a bream and bass fishing river for me way upstream around the Oakbrook area.

Thanks for the input. I live pretty close to the Stono so that would probably be my first venture. Any suggestions for the Stono? I’ve also been looking a lot into kayaks, that seems like a fun and cheaper option to expand my fishing capabilities.

James Island County Park has a nice fishing dock. Kayaks are awesome, and you’ll see lots more wildlife up close and personal with one. They are a lot of work to get to where you want to fish. Get good at paddling in ponds while fishing before you try to fish somewhere with a current and tides is my advice for kayak fishing. My buddy pretty much put his away for the winter since the water is so cold right now. We’ll be back out there on them come spring. Ask around in the kayak forum and you’ll get a lot of responses from a lot of passionate kayakers.

Limeouse bridge has a dock for fishing…but if you walk down the bank( you’ll need some low boots) and pass under the bridge there’s some better fishng Lang there…and most of the fisherman stay n the dock. Look for the drain pipe and oysters.

Slalem, I thought you said you lived in Mt. P, but you live close to the Stono ?? Sounds like you might have your rivers mixed up. If you are seeing a lot of kayaks sounds like Shem Creek. I 2nd DolphinD, go visit with him, rent a kayak and see how you like it. All of the other options provided up top are great also
