hey i am thinking about picking up a fly rod soon and was wonderin if there are any good place to go in the charleston area
I picked up my first saltwater rig from the Charleston Angler in W.Ashley. Sage Launch 8 weight with a G.Loomis Reel. Great guys that know their stuff.
I got my gear from Charleston Angler too and they got me started with a Sage Launch 9’ 8wt. and an orvis reel. seems to be a pretty good set up so far.

I’ve been thinking of expanding to the flyrod too. About how much did your setup cost? Would it be appropriate for a beginner who’s not entirely sure it’s their cup of tea?
Thanks for any info.

I was in your same boat, Dragonslayer. This is what I got:
Rod: TFO Signature Series 9’, 8wt. - $100
Reel: G. Loomis Venture 7 (8wt) - $100
Line: Scientific Anglers Mastery: Redfish -$60ish
Throw in some flies, leaders, and a good fly box and you’re looking at about $400 out the door.
Mine is a beginner setup that I am pretty happy with and it wasn’t too hard on the wallet. I haven’t landed my first fish on it yet (just got it at Christmas), but am hoping to do so with these tall tides over the weekend.
If you have any specific questions re: fly setup, let me know. I won’t have all the answers, but can probably point you in the right direction. Or, if you’re in the area, stop by one of the Charleston Anglers. Mike in Mt. Pleasant or Josh in West Ashley are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and are good people. Just ask for them when you walk in and they’ll hook you up with what you need.
Thanks Fishin! Appreciate the info.

You don’t need to break the bank but you need to buy something that’s good enough quality if you don’t like the sport, you can resell it and get your mondy back out of the deal or at least come close. You will also find that a good quality casting rod with the right line set up will make it a lot easier to learn and enjoy the sport. My suggestion would be to go to a good quality local fly shop like the Angler and talk to someone like Mike. Cast a few set ups and see what feels and works the best to you in the price range your most comfortable paying. Then buy it and go fishin. Fly fishing is like just about everything else in American Society. Your going to find a bunch of junk that priced really cheap, you’re going to finds a bunch of stuff that’s over rated and over priced and you’re going to find a bunch of stuff in the middle that’s just right, happy hunting!
were you looking for places to shop or places to fish?
we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control
I went with a Cabellas 8 wgt saltwater large arbor rod reel combo and it has served me well. It was priced nicely and has been a good purchase. Might want to take a look into one. Good luck
