New to Saltwater Fly Fishing

Hi yall. I’m not new to fishing in saltwater or to fly fishing but I’ve never actually fly fished in the salt before. I live in Old Village so the first place I’d like to try is either Shem Creek of somewhere new Pitt Street during low tide.

I’ve got a 9 foot Sage rod with 6 line and a Ross reel. Does anyone have any ideas about what kind of flies I should use? Because I have no idea what kind of flies to use in the salt but I have a wide variety.

Thanks.

I enjoy throwing my 5/6 wt at Docklights the few times I have had the pleasure of doing it … We used a gummy minnow, just ask any of the fly shops, this year if I get a chance I will be throwing EP Fiber minnows with pearl minnow flash, I can post pictures if you want an idea of what they look like

I have some flies that look a lot like clousers that are flashy redish and silver. I might give those a shot. I’ve also got one fly that kind of looks like a sand flea.

I’ve got a bunch of different flies that look like dragonflies and other flies and I was wondering if anyone thinks those might be any effective.

Thanks.

HEY 2fast,
Always hit the local fly shop for the local info.Where ever you may fly fish. For night fishing true yellow is the best color, spotails are usually not too picky, select the correct size and color, they will bite. Also you maybe able to up line your current rod to help throw the heavy flies in the coastal wind. All depends on the spine of your rod. Sage are usually fast action sometimes may carry 2 line sizes up. Go to a shop and ask to throw their demo lines on your rod. Buy good name brand line.

Thanks, I went out this morning at 5 AM and fished until 8 AM. I caught three trout, all on the heaviest minnow looking fly I had because it was so windy.

Oh yea and I was at Pitt Street.
