did a lot of freshwater fly fishing up north in lakes and streams so what weight leaders do you use for red fishing here…what weight pole and reel you would recommend…wet or dry line…regular or weight forward line…thx bob
8 weight ROD not a pole (use the term pole when you go back up north with the yanks to fish for walleye), weight forward floating line (all fly lines are wet)
A good general setup for reds/trout would be a 7-9 wt, with a 9’8wt perfect. Weight forward floating line / 9ft tapered leader to 10-12lbs. Larger Arbor reels are also pretty much standard.
scotty thanks for the help…bob
i would ditto large arbor but remember backing. 100 yds is recommended although there’s are no 100 yard runs without an oyster bar to cut you off in PI but the bigger water in cha town maybe. its about the only use i have for powerpro or the other braids. 9 ft 8 weight or 7 if you stay up the creek. overload the line by 1 wt for easier but shorter casts. accurate 50 ft casts is good enuff for most of the inshore stuff. the tapered leader will help turn it over but a straight piece of 20 will work or a 20 17 14 3 piece. heavier up in the grass. flouro works good because it sinks faster than mono. unless you are popping on top and the flouro will make it dip. then mono. i use a leader slightly shorter than the rod because i am usually stalking through the grass and it is easiest to hold it all in one hand.
