New to Saltwater

Hey all, I just bought a kayak and am looking forward to getting out on the water. However, I am completely new to the saltwater side of things. I am looking for some advice on rigs and tackle for redfish and trout. Like i said i’m new to saltwater and new to the Charleston area so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

the wind is not your friend.

Welcome,

I keep it simple and primarly use 1/8 gigheads with 3 or 4 different color paddletail grubs. With live bait, a split shot about 8 inches above a #6 or #2 kayle hook depending on size of bait. When using a float, I move the weight just a bit closer to the bait and set the float anywhere from 1-4ft.
Come on down to the lagoon next weekend.

i like to use that gulp saltwater baits
i cought a 5 pound flounder of of that stuff

Go to the Charleston Angler in W. Ash and ask for Josh. He will help you out…and he will give you a start on what areas to try and catch some reds and trout…if I were giving you advice I’d tell to go to Colonial lake with a Zebco Rino rig with some beetle spin jigs.

do you live in seaside farms

no troutking i live in west ashley. I live real close to church creek and west ashley park. How do tides play a role in fishing? is high tide or low tide better, or in between. any of you guys do any fly fishing out of your kayak?

Keep it simple saltwater fishing is very similar to fresh water and actually some freshwater plastics work very well on redfish and trout you can use exudes, gulps, spinner baits, or even live or cut bait. Fishing is a little different in that saltwater fish are most active on moving tides not slack tides and also look for some sort of cover or eddies around oyster beds hope that can help you

In addition to what everyone else has said, learn how to rig and hook live shrimp. In about another month or so you will hear alot about popping corks and Cajun Thunders. I also like to use saltwater assassin lures for trout and cut bait for reds.
