Hey all,
My name is Mario and I’m new to this forum. I own a pair of SOT kayaks (malibu X-factor and a stealth-12). I would like to learn more about saltwater kayak fishing as its foreign to me. Only have ever fished freshwater before. Which also means the gear I have is probably poorly suited for SW fishing. (I have an abu 6.5’ medium action w/ spinning reel).
I eventually will buy a more appropriate rod but for now I’m going to make this do. I was thinking of going with 14lb test, stranded line and ditching the mono thats on there now. Is that something reasonable if I am planning on fishing for things like reds?
I’m glad to find this forum and look forward to reading and learning more about the hobby. Would also like to meet some fellow kayak anglers so I hope to make it out to a group fish event someday.
In the meantime, if anyone goes out around the wando and wants a tag-a-long noob, let me know. I can read all day but time on the water is really the best way for me to learn.
Hope y’all have a great holiday weekend full of fishin!
Willkommen.
Chris

One “secret” to catching redfish in a kayak is to go further upstream into the creeks than boats can go. Many redfish will be up in the skinny, skinny stuff even in highly pressured creeks. Be stealthy, and they’ll never know you’re there until you stick a hook in their lips.
I only take my cheap gear on a kayak. It’s going to get saltwater in it. Cut a piece of foam noodle to a string and then to your rods if you don’t want to buy fancy leashes. I lost three rods before I started doing this.

Welcome! Since your a freshwater and bass guy I’m presuming a few bass tactics work great for reds! And you could fish the upper Ashley or upper cooper at bushy park in brackish water and catch bass and reds.ne tip, go buy a 7’ med ugly stick(50$) and a shimano sienna 4000 reel($30) I’ve had my stik for 2+ years and my siennas for 1 year, still going strong. Good cheap combo that works. Put 20lb braid and fish a Carolina rig with life mud minnow or finger mullet under docks an hour before and after low tide. A good way to start catchin reds. If you wanna try what whofarted said your Abu should be OK and use a 1/4 oz jig head and a live bait, get up the creeks and sight cast to swirls on the water, try multiple creeks and you should get one. A popular thing around here for trout and flounder is a shakey head if sorts the famous trout trick, fished in a jig head, follow instructions on package. Go into some local tackle shops like haddrells or Charleston angler and they’ll set you up with everything. Good luck!
