new to this

been wanting to get into fly fishing some and well wifey hooked me up with a starter set up on fathers day, nothing fancy…lol…i am probably gonna break it anyway. but i striper fish alot and my plans are to hit a striper, red and trout OTF this year. its an 8wt, is this too big for trout and reds? also any suggestions on flys to buy for these fish. i have been reading all the threads on here to gain as much knowledge as i can. very good info in them i thank you guys for that, still casting in the back yard for now but hoping to get it wet sometime.

8 wt. is perfect for reds and trout and stripers, threw the fly at hartwell for the stripers yesterday early mornin and they weren’t havin none of it. Good luck with those landlocked fish, unless you can catch em in a boil its rough. If you do get into em tho, let that fly sink down deep before you start your retrieve cause im sure you know those big boys are layin under the little hybrids at the top

With proper timing it is not hard to catch stripers on murray, but this time of year it will be hard. I have had success in late fall and winter when the fish are busting shad in the coves and are shallow-look for the gulls. Once you find them they tend to be in the same area for several weeks. I usually fish the headwaters and hollow creek area when doing this. When it all lines up right, it is a blast.

“Fishing is alot like sex…when its good,it’s really good, and when its bad, its still pretty good.”

yea i am not looking at the stripers untill this winter when they are shallow. could hit the rivers for them but don’t want to put the stress on the fish in the heat and them not live, it would be different if you could take them home, but i don’t think the dnr boys would like that:imp:
