Hey Guys!
I am the proud new owner of a Native Ultimate 14.5 (Thanks Time out!) Last weekend I took the little woman down the French Broad River and had a blast. But now its time to put the yak to REAL use! Fishing!
I live off of Hobcaw creek, and want to start there to get a feel for everything. I have done some fishing off the ocean side of the low country, but not back up in these creeks. Anyone else fish around here? Got any pointers for a noob?
I am thinking finger mullet for reds on a falling tide on the marsh beds. Is that about right?
Thanks!
John
first, if you own a dock please do not just leave your kayak sitting out there rotting in the sun, the sun kills kayaks and I hate seing all those great fishing machines rotting in the sun on docks, second welcome to the insanity
third, man there is a lot of fun ahead of you. Hobcaw creek isn’t bad for fishing, mouth of the creek around that island during a rising or falling tide will produce fish. Look for structure, bait and anythign that looks fishy
There are so many places that you can fish and that hold fish…right now finger mullet work but so will shrimp. The best plan is to take a cast net and what ever bait you are finding will probably work best, but a redfish will hardly ever turn down a free mullet lunch
basically when the tide is up the reds are in the grass chasing bait, when the tide starts to fall they come out and head for deeper water so fishing the grass edges on a falling tide and of course on a rising tide usually will find you fish. the best part of it is finding the fish and when they bite. again, welcome to the insanity and we’ll see ya on the water…

Thanks Jedi!
I got out this morning, but much later than I had anticipated. I had hoped to get out real early and be in position at the top od the tide. But I missed it, so instead paddled around and did some sitting on the mouths of the side creeks since the water was already off the mud. It was real interesting to see the exodus of bait fish coming down the creeks!
I had a couple of real good hits! Took finger mullet on a float and took off, but none of them ever set. Maybe the hooks were too small? Maybe I am waaaaaaaaay rusty?
Anyway, I had a GREAT morning! and now I am looking forward to tomorrow morning! Practice makes perfect!
If you’re going after Reds, use circle hooks. I usually use a 3 or 4, and have straightened both sizes out at one time or another. That’s just a good fight and the fish deserved to win in those situations. Look into braided line, that’s all I use when I’m out.
Welcome to yak fishing.

chances are pretty good the fast takes with no hookup could be ladyfish. They’re everywhere right now
