New Yakker Looking For Some Tips

Haven’t posted in some time, and when I do, it is usually about my aging SeaPro 180CC. Anyhow, I recently bought an Angler Edition 15’ Ocean Kayak Prowler from Luden’s. Got a good deal with the 10% discount that they were offering from the East Coast Kayak Festival. Good boat for me, I am 6"3", 200 pounds. The Prowler 13’ I thought was a bit slow throught he water. Anyhow, since then, I bought a nice fiberglass paddle from Time Out and a Crazy Creek tall back inflatable bottom kayak seat.

I am finally ready to take it out for some touring, and then I will do some fishing out of it in time. I do have a couple of questions. Are there any groups or clubs that tour local waterways? I live in Goose Creek, so I would like to spend some time in the Cooper, Foster Creek, Filbin Creek, etc. Also, I saw a HUGE dead gator floating tits up last Saturday when boating. He was floating not far from the Cypress Gardens landing. Does anybody have any advice on how not to get eaten or chased, and is it a bad idea to go out alone in any particular areas?

I am a novice yakker, but have done a lot of canoeing. I am really looking forward to yak fishing, but want to develop some more confidence before I wet a line.

I am looking forward to everybody’s input.

thats a nice yak.me bein a little heavier than you,it didnt work for me.theres plenty of people on here that know yakkin around here, you shouldnt have a problem hookin up with some.you havin canoe experience,go on out and have fun.filbin creek is a nice place to go have a paddle.some gators, but they dont bother you.obviously,it would be nice to have someone with you,but dont let it stop you from paddlin in some creeks, etc. surfman

I have been hitting Copahee alot if you are interested contact me and we can meet up sometime, I am full of useless knowledge and accidently catch a fish every know and then, if Mudroc would only give me back ther magic float

Come on out to Bushypark tomorrow morning,7am. Low tide means free bait… might catch a fish:wink:

5151 Think I’ll hold on to it as a hostage, at least until I get better. No fare that you can paddle and fish and I can’t.

Mud hope you are recovering well, let me know if you need anything

Thanks for the responses everyone. Thanks for the offers, cutmullet and 5151. I am sorry that I didn’t check the posts in time to take you up on the offer, cutmullet. Copahee sounds like a good place to capsize, as well, 5151.

I found the Charleson Kayak Club listed on the web. I will investigate and let everybody know what I found out.

Sammie, don’t know if you came across these guys yet, but the Low Country Paddlers, www.lowcountrypaddlers.net, are a great group of people. They have recently started a fishing club offshoot as well. Also, the charleston county park and rec commission takes lots of trips and offers great instruction, check them out at www.ccprc.com
As far as gators go, they don’t want to bother you. I see them all the time, and they just want to get out of the way.
See you on the water,
