Stonoman invited me out on his boat along with my Dad. Started by loading up on some live shimp and a few spot in 18-20 feet of water. We fished a few areas including docks, small flats and drifting along some sections of shoreline. The fish were definitely less active with the cooler weather and grey skies. Each of us caught a red with sizes ranging from 22 to 27 inches on a mix of live bait and artificials. Saw quite a few pushes as the water was coming out of the grass, but then slowed towards the bottom of the tide. Thanks for the ride Joe.

I saw the shrimp .Blew my mind LOL Will get me a deep net so i can get those deep shrimp.
Stonoman
Joe…you don’t have to have a deep net for up there. I don’t use mine ther unless I am in the sound or deeper water. My rule of thumb…if you can see them breaking on the bank they are usually kinda shallow or right on the ledge where it drops off. Most all of the ones I catch along the stono river itself for bait is in 2-14foot of water…and on mid to low tide it’s usually around 8 foot in the deepest parts …and for that you don’t need a heavy taped deep hole net…so save yourself some dollars :). Buy something cheap as those hidden stono stumps and pieces of trees are everywhere and love eating nets…this is from someone who has fed them a few! If you feel resistance you can often get straight over it and get it back with a little patience. I’ve been catching shrimp out in front of docks on low tide in the stono and the wappoo cut as well as folly still. Also remember the December rule… 12 dozen live or dead restriction

Hey pen sorry for my ignorance. Can you please give more explanation on the December rule. 12 dozen live or Dead restriction? Rookie question here I usually roll and am happy with a dozen live maybe 2… But then again I am happy landing 5-6 fish and have not had a day when I landed more than a dozen. I am also fishing Charleston harbor and ICW which is hit hard.

Food shrimping is closed from Dec.16 - April 30. During this time you can still catch bait shrimp but are limited to 12 dozen dead or alive in the boat. See http://www.dnr.sc.gov/regs/pdf/saltwaterfishing.pdf#page=3

The way I read it is that is says nothing about the purpose of the shrimp during the closed season, whether food or for bait.

12 dozen makes a pretty good meal
They don’t really specify, do they. Seems like it used to say food shrimp. “Just taking them home for frozen bait, officer”
