Went fishing with a good friend and his son today. The son, Daniel, has played baseball his whole life and now that he’s on the tail end of that he has been enjoying surf fishing and wanted to try redfish.
We definitely accomodated him!
Started at dawn looking for trout but was skunked. Headed up the Wando to fish a few money docks. Set up and immediately started catching reds. All lower slot but we stayed quite busy for awhile!
Once the bite started to slow I suggested we try a new spot for incoming tide, hoping for bigger fish. A few minutes later WHAM! Daniel is hooked up to Redzilla! Drag was set for little fellas and the spool is just screaming. Tried tightening gently but the backing line was starting to show on the spool! So we crank down on the drag, start horsing him back, and pull anchor to give chase.
Line held up, we gathered in some braid, and played him out from the channel. A 33" 14lb BEAST of a redfish! It was awesome! First day of redfishing and he sets the boat record! Not sure I’m in the Top 5 anymore, to be honest! LOL!
Wound up with around 20 reds for the day, all caught on mudminnows on 1/4 oz. jigs. Bite strongest about 2 hours before dead low. All caught off end of docks.
Daniel led the way with biggest and mostest reds! Was a cool day that I look forward to enjoying again some day!
