Newbie: Fishing Kayak Help Please!!!

Guys, I’m considering getting a fishing kayak, but I don’t really know where to begin. I don’t want to spend a ton considering I’m new and it’ll only be used during the summer. Do ya’ll have any recommendations for a sit-on-top fishing kayak for a newbie that won’t break the bank?

Look at Dick’s Sporting Goods, you can pick up a Perception caster 12.5 for under $400. We don’t have one here in Cola but, I understand Sports Authority has a comparable one for around the same money. I just bought the Perception and so far really like it. Will be fishing it for the fist time tomorrow. Man, it is a challenge figuring out how to pare down what I normally use to use on a kayak. If I catch anything to tomorrow, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Most any fishing designed kayak you see in the shops nowadays are pretty solid platforms, even the off brands. Look on paddling.net to find unbiased kayak reviews. Get a decent lightweight paddle and make sure to have enough storage and weight capacity for all your gear. Go scout around at the local kayak shops and they can answer any specific questions about fit and usage. They may even have some used yaks to sell. Look for kayak demo days where you can go out and paddle several models to compare.
If you’re price conscious (like me), find out what you’d like then buy used.
Most of all have fun! That’s what it’s all about.

You should also check the fishing forum classifieds.
SCkayakfishing.com also has a classified section.
You can sometimes get a good deal on a yak already rigged for fishing. Check out craig’s list too.
