Newbie Kayak question

Moving to Charleston area (probably Summerville area).
I will be in temp housing while selling my NC house.
I want to fish a lot and soon. I figure my Prius can probably carry a Kayak (maker / model suggestions welcomed) on rooftop, and my V-6 Toyota Tacoma (which arrives much later)can handle a motorboat/trailer when I get to permanent housing If Kayak catches my supper consistently, I will forego motorboat and pop for an expensive Kayak which has pedal power. Since I cycle 500+ miles per month, I figure Hobie pedaling will not be a challenge. If I can do the whole catch supper thing (sea trout, redfish, Black Drum, flounder, whiting) thing from a kayak I would be delighted to save the hassle and expense of a motorboat.

I solicit advice about what sort of Kayak rig I can mount on Prius for a 12-14ft STABLE inshore fishing Kayak (recommendations welcomed there too). Must be roof mount. Adding trailer mount to Prius invalidates warranty.

THANK YOU for your assistance.

If you are worried about a motorboat being an hassle no use in messing with it because it will be. If you figure out the Charleston area successfully catching dinner won’t be a problem. Learn the area. Also demo some some kayaks at Time Out Sports.

Definitely demo as many kayaks as you can first. Many guys will let you try out their kayaks and many have extras for you to go out and fish for a day. I was in the same “boat” with kayak vs boat fishing. I found that a small boat is little maintenance and has much more versatility in my opinion. I have a 16 ft skiff with a 60 hp Yamaha and a minnkota copilot trolling motor. I can launch in a foot of water and I draft about 3 or 4 inches. I can hit the jetties in a few minutes going 35 mph, or I can fish a flat with a foot of water. Very little maintenance, very comfortable to fish from, and I barely pay any money for gas because it sips fuel. Having both a kayak and boat is ideal though!

Go out of bowens Island they have rental and guide service for kayaks there nice people and its a good way to get some yak time/info/experience and scout a future spot. I’m not sure of there prices but seen a lot of happy customers, but if you have your own its like 5 bucks to leave out bowens but worth it when you consider how close it puts you to good fishing. I fish this area all the time, fish the docks and the 3 creeks to the right if your facing the water. You will catch a ton a fish in that area and a good mix, but the best part about it is its almost always secluded from the wind and that whole area is only a couple miles so figuring it out is possible in a few trips. You have structure, flats, creeks and deep water all in a short distance and best of all good fishing. You will be able to target your choose of trout, drum, sheeps and you will catch the occasional flounder. In the summer there is so much of everything I wouldn’t waste my time listing them and fall fishing is great and Folly creek has the best tasting oysters in my opinion.
