Newbie lookin 4 advice

Hi everyone!

I’ve been watching the forum for sometime and really appriciate the comments and pics.

I grew up in miami fl, and always went deep sea fishing with my Dad and when I was 13 we moved to columbia SC, and I always thought that I left any hope of pulling in big fish in FLA. I didn’t think that charleston had the big fish. Since seeing this forum I can see thats not true. So now that I’m 29 I’M EXCITED to see that fishing is not that far away. (Side note: the drive to charleston is not bad to me, i’ve tried pond fishing and it’s too much like catching bait, so going to chaleston is not a problem)

I want your opinions on what kind of starter boat I should look at (20ft. or more) what reels (penn?) what baits are good? Do you guys net your bait fish? What the 380 hole and all these other spots you guys talk about? Should I buy a nautical map? Whats a good GPS/fish finder to buy? Whats the best marina to go out of coming from columbia? And any other advise you have.

I thank you in advance for your educated comments.

I think maybe you would get more of a response if you posted this in the fishing discussion area.

If it drives,floats ,or #$%@s …rent it!!!

might want to post this in the fishing discussion page

20 or more yes
avet penn shimano the list goes on
usually catch fresh bait
get a map

im a no brainer

sounds to me, that you probably need to get some nearshore experience, prior to heading offshore, If I were you, I would start bottom fishing in closer places and after you get use to the local conditions, then start planning longer trips,

get a 23’ minimum,

make sure you have a big tank of gas, my 23’ carries 120 gallon

reels: depend on your budget, cheap and reliable option TLD-25, if you are willing to spend more than that check the Avets 30’s or the 4/0’s

bait, depend what you are fishing for,

if you are planning to fish the 380 hole, all you need is 4 bags of ballyhoo (from baitmasters) and a lot of gas

bottom fishing, fresh live bait the best

safety equipment:

Epirb
VHF fixed and portable
GPS fixed and portable
flares
and 100 other things you need

Fernando

Go to a offshore basics class/seminar put on by Charleston Angler and don’t be affraid to ask lots of questions even though from alot of people that fish it’s like pulling teeth for some reason…Good luck

You have definitely found the right place for opinions. When you are able to differentiate between the educated and noneducated comments, you will have become a master fisherman:smiley:

Hire a charter boat a few times and decide for yourself if you want to venture offshore in a 20+ boat. Learn from them how fish are caught out of Charleston( bait, rigs, etc).

i was born & raised in miami, cut my teeth in the keys. went to Christopher Columbus H.S. the fishing is much better here due to a few mill. less boats,if you can stand the ride.drop me an email, earahill@bellsouth.net. sounds like you need to ride with a few locals and learn the ropes. IF you can cut through the crap on this site there is alot of good info by good folks willing to help!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Sorry for posting here. I’ll try the discussion forum too.

A good buddy of mine is from Pahokee and went to Columbus. He currently resides in Summerville. The name would be Ben Sadler.
