Newbie Report: 1 Trout, 1 Red on Wed.

Been lurking here since I moved to Summerville from West GA about a year back. I grew up fishing inshore at my grandmother’s house in Brunswick, GA but she passed in 2010, so I’m rusty! Anyway…finally got my fishing kayak in the saltwater today, and had a decent first trip.

Put in at dead low at Elliott Cut on Wed. I paddled around exposed oyster shell throwing a z-man trout eye jighead with a trout trickworm. Caught a decent little red and a small trout. Fished about 3 hours or so. Managed to get a quick, crappy picture of one before letting it swim off.

Hope this report is helpful to someone. Your reports/discussions have been and continue to be an awesome resource for this new guy. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing.

Since you’ve seen the discussions on abusing fish(especially reds), I’ll break you in.

That poor red will never be able to use its nostrils after being forced to lie next to those stinky shoes and old Crown bottle…the horror…the horror…

Welcome!

Nice maiden voyage in the yak. A couple pointers, especially fishing in clearer(winter) water. I would use braid to fluoro for my leader and secondly, I would lose the snap swivel. You may have had less fish feed on your bait with the setup you were throwing. I typically tie my braid(12#) to my fluro(20#) then tie the fluoro to the jighead. I know the snap swivel makes it easier to swap out if you decide to change, but that’s why you bring another rod rigged with something different. Just my $.02 but nice catch!

Ha! @mdaddy, I’ll be nicer to the next one(s).

Thanks for the tip @Firefighterj80…I need all the help I can get. Yeah, I was cheating, lol. I rarely use them. I just didn’t have much confidence in my tackle choices with so many new variables here, so I was changing more than I’m used to. Will work on duplicating your setup for clear/cold water for next trip! Thanks again!

Good post and welcome. Tell me about your handle and that bottle that you found
