Newbie Report, 5/1

My son and I were finally able to get off shore. We cleared the jetties at MI at 6:00 AM, heading towards the Parking Lot ledges and Vermilion. As others have stated, it was a rough/wet ride.

I had talked to a couple of guys on Thursday, and they both said that they had some luck between 110’ - 130’. We put lines in at 95’ and my son almost immediately hooked a slinger. We trolled the Parking Lots and Vermillion and ended up with some small dolphin and Bonitas. So we had meat and fun. Most of you would have thought that it was a pretty slow day, but for our first time we had a ball, and had something to show for it.

We did learn a few things too. Most important, is that two lines in the water that don’t get tangled, is better that four lines that you have to untangle every 30 minutes or so.

We would have ventured out a little deeper, but there was a nasty storm a few miles farther out, and we decided to stay between it and the shore.

Everything we caught was with squid with a pink skirt; right at 100’; water temp ~ 71. Everytime we saw dolphin (the mammal, not the fish) we hooked up.

And, to finish up a great weekend; Saturday night we took a sunset cruise over to Murrell’s Inlet for drinks and appetizers. I’ve been trying to come up with a good name for my boat instead of the U.S.S. Midlife Crisis. My daughter commented on some of the boats that used hull colors in their name’s: “Blue Thunder,” “Black Beauty,” etc. Well, my boat is so white that you need sunglasses even on a cloudy night, that she said I should call the boat “White Trash.” PERFECT!

The first step in a 12 step program is admitting you have a problem . . .

. . . Then I’m on the road to recovery!

Hey, Itch; good report, always good to see father/son fishing teams like my son and me. we do need to get together soon, my younger son was married April 18th at Red Fez Club, Lake Wylie. He and I want to fish Lake Wylie with you sometime, my older son lives in Charleston. He was forced to fish Breach Inlet with his wife and son yesterday, due to a problem with his Suburban. He and I are working on a trip May 23rd to bluewater trolling/bottom fishing. PM if interested in getting together soon somewhere since we both have fishing sons…
