Newbie, sorry...Greenie question on boat share

Done some limited offshore fishing in the past but mostly a flats/inshore fly guy. But, hoping to get on some shared rides this summer offshore to round out my fishing experience.
I’m generally seeing guys asking $150 for a shared ride. Are these usually captains trying to fill a charter or just a guy with a boat looking for fishing buddies to split costs?
Do you usually get to bring home some fish (assuming you caught some).
Thx

$150 is usually a private angler just looking to share costs. Offshore fishing is a expensive hobby. Gas for a basically a 200 mile round trip plus bait, ice, etc. A charter boat will easily run you 400 or more a person for 6 people plus the tip you leave for the mates.

“Good things come to those who bait”

Mostly rec guys looking to fill their boat and cut down on cost.
Dollar amount is based on what the average cost of a trip is…fuel, ice, bait, etc. split by “X” number of anglers.
I’ve met some pretty good guys on here and always split catch equally.
I’m sure most do the same.

Thanks Phin and Bottomsup, that’s the info I was looking for. I agree, offshore fishing is pricey so I have no problem contributing what’s needed to the team. I fished with some guys in Jaxville FL on their 38 Yellowfin with triple 300s. I remember them gassing up one time and it was over $1000. They said they burned 1 gallon/minute when all 3 were full open (but we also were able to cruise out to the stream at about 50 mph).

(On a side note, would love to throw a fly at some dolphin)
