Newbie surf questions

First, let me say that I have had 2 saltwater fishing experiences. 1 was surf fishing with my father at racoon keys when I was like 8 or 9. The 2nd was off shore king fishing with my friend Ron. I LOVED fishing for King, but never got a chance to go back.

Having said that. I am looking to take my 6 year old and 9 year old surf fishing this memorial day out on folly. My immediate needs are getting equipment, rigging, and baits for me and my sons. I am contemplating borrowing gear from friends, rather than purchase some as I am not sure how much my sons will “get hooked”.

Any rod/reel suggestions for my 6 year old? He’s fished with a zebco setup and can cast with the push button reel.

Is there any prep I can do to premake some rigs ahead of time? Should we try any artificial bait?
Likely will go with real bait consisting of live mud minnows, live fiddlers, and frozen mullets. Suggestions?

In regards to mullets (and even the fiddlers) how do you go about baiting the hooks? I assume you just cut up the mullet and bait the hook.

Should I consider getting rod holders?

Where would be a good place on Folly to take them. I’m thinking north side of the island.

I have checked and low tide is at 5AM with high tide at 11:19AM. Is fishing with the tide coming in going to be a problem?

I think that is enough for now. I’m really looking forward to the fishing trip and to learning more about saltwater fishing both surf fishing and off-shore.

Thanks in advance for your patience and responses.

i have caught sharks down by the coast guard sta. i use big spinning rods as i like spottails and sharks. i bring a small bass rod and some shrimp to catch whiting or whatever small fish i can catch for cutbait.you could just buy some from one of the asian markets though. for rod holders, i use PVC pipe with a sharp angle cut at the bottom to go into the sand easier.you need to run a 10’’ bolt through it so you can use your weight to drive it into the sand.a pyramid sinker and a piece of wire a 9/0 circle hook is all i usually use.i only surf fish a couple times a year and am no expert but i usually catch a few.we got one shark about 5’ long.also, check pawn shops for inexpensive surf rods. hope this helps.

I see that you have posted over in the Surf/Pier Fishing thread too. Those guys will give you tons of helpful information. I don’t get to surf fish as much as I use to but, I always read their reports and comments. Good group of guys and girl(s). Good luck.

i only surf fish when the kids want to go to the beach. then i bring a couple poles along.i did get one of those carts that holds the cooler. pretty nice.
