Hi, I’m new to kayaks & inshore fishing. Been lurking (learning) on this site. I’m buying a Hobie Revo. From DD (hopefully), when I come down in August. I’ll be out @ IOP (Wild Dunes). any sugestions on a good place to learn the ropes with the Yak? Was thinking about Dewees Inlet (inside the overhead wires), it’s close to the house. How bad are the currents? The marina @ IOP dosen’t seem like a good place to start, too much traffic. Any advise or suggestions will be very welcome.
Thanks,
Rick
P.S. DD I e-mailed you on Friday, let me know.
Oh, this ol’ river keeps on rollin’, though,
No matter what gets in the way and which way the wind does blow,
And as long as it does I’ll just sit here
And watch the river flow.
I would launch from IOP Marina and beat feet across the ICW and find one of the sounds or creeks that are there to practice. I started in the pond behind my house until I got the hang of paddling and was ready to venture out. Took me about half an hour before I was comfortable with my yak and I didn’t have any problems once I started venturing out. My best advice is watch out for the power boats. We are like motorcycles of the water… no one really watches out for us. You can be as safe as ever but all it takes is one yahoo to not pay attention to where he is going and you are chum. I stay as close to the grass as possible in shallower water where most boats don’t get and try to wave a lot, 1 to be nice and 2 to make sure they see me. If I have to cross water like the ICW I wait for a clear moment and beat feet, or I should say paddle as fast as I can and try to cross at the narrowest point I can find. Congrats on the new yak and I am sure you will love it as much as the rest of us!
Thanks, Nikon. will do. used to race small sailboats and understand the need to watch out.
any lauch points on Sullivans?
I’m not restricted to IOP.
Thanks, Rick

If you go past Ft Moultrie about 2 blocks down is a ramp, I don’t know if it is private or not haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, I live in Summerville so I do a lot of my yakking at bushy park. I am not sure about any other places to launch around there. Check with Dolphin D ( Dave) at TIme out down on Coleman blvd, he wroks down that way and probably has a better idea on where you could launch. Good luck to ya!
Any where it’s wet, the less current and traffic the better until you get your sea legs. The main thing is to get comfortable and get some confidence the only way to do that is to get wet and get some experience.
How do you get to Copahee (spl?) landing? I’ve heard it discussed
here, can’t find it on Google Earth. Is it near Charleston National?
Thanks,
Rick

I think I found it, Is it a road that runs out to the sound, with
a small creek that has what looks like a shell mound with trees on
it, to the left where it runs into a larger creek? If so how to get there by car?
Thanks Again, everyone great site

Rick, go north on 17, the turn off is 4 miles past Highway 41 on the right. Just after the Berkeley Electric Offices. Brown sign on the right says “Copahee Sound Access”. Just go down to the end of the road, you can’t miss the “landing”. Be careful out there at low tide, not much water in most spots.
