Newbie

Hey everyone,
Im new to the site and the Charleston fishing. I mostly flyfish warmwater and rivers. Im getting burned out on LMB and Trout…So its time to try some Salt. Im planning on heading down this weekend or next…Depends on work. I have a little 14ft jon boat with a 15 hp on it but its really old…So I will probably not drag it down from Greenville SC. Anyone wanna go fishing this weekend or next? Show me a few tips for some Reds, Mac or THE JACKS!!!Im game for anything!!
Thanks

Welcome! what weight flyrod do you have? It depends on the weight on what u can go after.

Ill trade you some saltwater tips for some bass tips(check out “bass otf”)

Got him!!!

I have alot of 4wt and 5wt rods…I also have 7wt and a 8wt set up for Salt. Im working on getting a 10wt. You Think a 8wt would do? We could see how fast I get spooled on a JacK LOL. Yea I will trade some tips with ya. You gonna be fishing this weekend?

Ok, no jacks. yes u would get spooled very fast. Bring the 7 and 8 weights. Bring some spinning or casting rods as well, you dont want to fly cast all day. Get clousers, bendbacks, decievers, etc and find some oyser bars at low tides. Got back when the current is rolling around them and let the fly get worked by the current. if using regular tckle use grub jigs or medium sized plugs. This will get you some trout or poosibly the odd red or ladyfish. OR- Find a old dock and with a regular rod cast a mud minnow, finger mullet, menhaden, etc. around the pilings. HEavy leader. tight drag, big reds. GOOD LUCK.

Got him!!!

Ok so is anyone up for some Flyfishing this weekend? I will pay for the Gas and drinks! I just dont have a boat…Plus Ive never really fished the area. Im a pretty good angler…been flyfishing for 15 years. I would be driving down from Greenville. I would be happy to get spooled on my 8wt…If the Jacks or in. Also Are there any spots to walk in for tailing reds? Hopefully I will Own a Boat soon!
Email me if interested!

If you can’t find a ride don’t sweat it, give Mad Mike a call in Mt. Pleasant at the Charleston Angler and he can give you a couple of spots to wade fish. This time of year on the flood tides you should be able to find some tailing Reds on the grass flats. Fish the structure discussed above on the falling tides. Spoon flies, Shrimp and Crab patterns will get you bit as will clousers and bait fish deceivers and bend backs. Play around with your weights and colors to you find something that make the fish happy. You may even be able to get a few to come up and take some top water which is a real hoot! If you don’t have what you think you need C.A. can hook you up. However, if you want to target the spanish and jacks around the inlests and jetties, your smaller boat and lighter weight fly rod is not the way to go however for fishing the flats and creeks your existing set up will work find, just be careful on the main water ways with the weekend boat traffic. As for as how you john will fish, it’s perfect for shallow water just try to pick yourself up a good push pole or trolling motor for the creeks, cuts, docs and bars… on the flats the pole or on foot is definately the way to go the quieter the better. If you can’t find a good saltwater trolling motor for the edge fising just anchor up with your pole or regular anchor and work the target area then move on to the next. The earlier comment about a good spinning or bait casting rods for blind cating is a great idea as is drowning a mud minnow, poggie, finger mullet or shrimp while you are searching the area and trying to find the fish. Once you are on them or can see them is the time to break out the long rod. Anyway best of luck in your saltwater ventures! our

Thats a great idea, go talk to mike. He’ll hook you up.

Got him!!!

Thanks for the Info guys!

Make sure you let us know how you do!

Mike just moved and I don’t think that he’s got the net yet so he probably won’t see this but you should be able to catch him at the shop. I can tell you right now that he’s going to send you to the flats around the corner from patriots point. He’ll also tell you to not bother unless the tide is a 6.0 or better though. He is working on a guide service out of kayaks which is very exciting, he’d likely take you to Copahee there. If you bring your john boat and a poll, try gray bay off of the ICW just north of the IOP connector.

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching

i agree greybay

Thanks everyone I will def be talking to mad mike when I make it down. I did hook up on a few carp last week. Pretty ugly fish…But they run like a bonefish when hooked. They tail just like Reds Once I figure out how to upload picks here i will post it…Its was about a 18-20lb IMG]http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x251/SC_Flyguy/000_0284.jpg[/IMG]

Those things frighten me. What did you catch it on? I thought they only ate white bread.

Caught it on a leach pattern. Threw the fly about 4 feet in front of it as it was tailing. It sucked it up and I set the hook and was in my backing within seconds. They are not best looking fish but tons of fun on a fly. Landed that one on my 7wt

Newbie also and have not been having much luck. Have been using a 9ft 8 wt and casting clousers, crabs, shrimp and spoons but still no luck. Have been scouting around Coosaw Island and found two spots with short grass, exposed sand and abundance of crabs but never see any red’s tailing. Have also tried using a spining rod with finger mullet, shrimp or casting a jig. Have caught several sharks one ray and got my first trout casting the jig close to the tall grass. Have tried the mullet and shrimp along the docks and oyster beds but no luck as of yet.

Have been using a kayak to fish out of and would not mind finding some other kayak fishers in the Beaufort area.

Thanks

Get in touch with Calibogue. He lives down your way and kills the red fish on the flats with a fly.
