newbie

I have been wanting to get a kayak for about a year, and finally bought one 3 weeks ago. So far i have fished out of it 3 times and been lucky enough to catch fish each trip. I am now hooked. I have been reading this forum for months and look forward to meeting other kayak fisherman since my current fishing buddies are still on land:smiley:.

Are you heading out this weekend?

Not sure. If I do it will be Sunday. What part of town are you from/fish?

Yakaholic, what part of town are you? Or where do you like to fish/launch?

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

I live in ravanel. I fish mainly south of downtown charleston. When I can I will go over to mt.p . What about yourself mountainman?

I’ll fish just about anywhere. Three weeks ago it was Folly, last weekend Shemm Creek. I like exploring new areas. Catching anything is a bonus. I was thinking about fishing Sullivans this weekend.

I’m not there yet, will be moving in a few weeks to downtown near the Citadel. I plan to launch from the Citadel Boat House because I will have access to it. So I plan to start with the Ashley. However, I will need to pick up a yak and don’t see many on CL.

DFreedom just posted this:
If you can go a bit more, I’d take a look at Dick’s (Perception Sport Caster 12.5) or Academy Sports (Perception Sports Pescador 12.5). Both are pretty good starter yaks. You can keep looking on CL, there always seem to be used ones for sale. be patient.

Where’d you get yours? I prefer used with the whole fishing setup, but am totally flexible. I’m not even dead set on a budget yet either.

I’m moving from Colorado, so I don’t even have salt water fishing gear, but plan to remedy that immediately too. My whole reason of moving to Charleston.

I have kayaked Shem Creek and Folly and love it. Just need to put a pole in the water. I’d love to hookup with you or JP.

Let me know if you got ideas on getting a yak, other than CL. Thanks.

Mountainman1, Just be patient and keep checking out craigslist. If you want to up your budget a bit there are some nice fishing rigs to be had in the 600 range. I’ll send you a PM.

I don’t plan to cheap out on my only yak, so 600 is ok. I think I will take a look at the TimeOut demo stuff too. Thanks, JP.

Someone on here sold a beautiful ride 135 last week for 650. So there are deals out there. Time out has some nice demos if they are still available. I’ve used quite a few of them. The Tarpon is fast, the ride is super stable and the Jackson Cuda is a very comfortable has decent speed and stability.

BTW, Nice win by your Broncos last week. I’m originally from the Baltimore area and we don’t care much for those Steelers.

I lived in Cincy for a few years (their last trip to Super Bowl - 1989), but have rooted against the Steeler since. We loved having Tebow here for one season, but LOVE having Peyton at the reigns now. Glad to see cry-baby Cutler lose this week to Green Bay. This should be a fun season for the Broncos. I actually miss out on a December game, since I’ll be in Charleston. Tebow looked good with the Jets for their first game.

Yeah, I saw the posting for the 135 for $650, and even posted. Tough when your 1700 miles away.

Mountainman1, I was looking in to getting the perception from dicks for around 450.00 but because of the low reviews on stability I ended up getting the ride 135. I am happy I went with the ride. I can fish standing up and even throw the cast net out of it. If u can afford it I would recommend spending a couple hundred more on a used ride/stable kayak rather than the ones from dicks.

Thanks, Yakaholic. Being new at kayaking, I think I definitely need the stability. Using the cast net is a nice option on the water if you run out of bait. JP has an extra buddy yak, so when I am in town, I’ll hook up with him for sure. I’ll pm you so you know when we are getting out. Look forward to meeting you fellers.

I love Peyton as qb but ya’ll sound so jealous of the Steelers… I know they are intimidating but just close your eyes when you get sacked and it will make it easier.

We’re stuck between Barack and a hard place. Hide their food stamps under their working boots.

Peyton got spanked last night, ouch. Three interceptions in the first quarter, plus a fumble. Well, it’s early in the season. Still take the Broncos over Steelers.

Horrible results the NFL this week. Oh well, the season is still young. Are you in town this weekend?

JP, I get there week of 10/22, but will have spouse helping move-in 10/27 and 11/3. Plus it is her birthday, so no fishin’ for this dog. Let’s shoot for weekend of 11/10 if that works for you (and weather). Also, if you bring yaks to work, we could launch from Citadel week of 11/5 (any day) after work, if you do that. Can’t wait to get on the water.
