So today’s my birthday and I got a shiny new St. Croix Imperial 4wt to go with the Lamson Velocity 1.5 I picked up back in February. That gives me a 4, 6, and 8 wt. setup. So now what?
I want to get a bigger saltwater rod/reel, but can’t decide between a 10 or 12 wt. What I would mostly be doing is fishing the local reefs for cobia, cudas, ajs, etc, with the occassional (hopefully) mahi and maybe even some 'poons thrown in, too.
So let’s hear it - what should I get? And let’s keep the price somewhat reasonable.
10wt GLX will do it all, even the 100lb poons go with a tibor or nautilus reel or the one I have been drooling over for some time. . . . . . . a Charlon Mako-God, that is the nicest fly reel know to man. You would almost never use a 12.

SG, that is a sweeeet reel! FF- a 10 wt is a worthy stick, indeed. my old BL5 came with a vhs (dating myself here) of a guy deadlifting 2 cinder blocks (45lbs) from a picnic table w/ it so, 10’s are def whuppin sticks. Ive been fishing a 10 for a while and recently stepped up to a 12 after a few humbling poons in isla
i dont think you can be reasonable when talkin 10and up…get the good stuff.
happy birfday dude!!
Most of us like to stay as light as we can but, if I was going to throw at AJ’s and cobia I would us a 12. I have a 10 and just can’t afford the damage those fish would do to it. I use my 10 to throw at local jacks and would’t even take it down to Florida because, the jacks down there are too plentiful. After you pull a few large jacks in your gear has been stressed. Just my 2 cents.
Stopped by the CA today to cast some rods. Decided to try out the 12s and as scotty said, I went with the good stuff.
Casted the Sage xi2, Loomis GLX, and the Winston Boron II-MX. All are around the same price, but the Winston just blew me away. I probably won’t be just randomly blind casting a 12 wt, but I feel like I could if I wanted to with the Winston. The tip felt much lighter and more responsive than both the xi2 and the GLX. Seriously, if you haven’t casted one, do yourself a favor and try it.
Went inside to check out the reels, and I think I’m going to go with the Ross Momentum 6. I like the Tibor and the Nautilus, but the Momentum seems to be a workhorse with a huge carbon fiber drag, and it’s a closeout right now so the price is right.
I’ve got the wife on board - now I just need to check the couch cushions and under the bed to scrape up enough coin to do it. This schitt ain’t cheap, but I guess you’ve got to spend your money on something .
winstons are the most distinctive casters out there. i fish xi2 and the boron IIX and they both are , for what they are, the best. the sage xi2 is a fast mofo but the winstons deliver the mustard with something undescribable. religion is the word that comes to mind. there is just something about em…???
I don’t want to sound like a spammer, but, the charleston angler is having 30% off everything for Father’s Day weekend. You can get that Winston and Momentum for a really good price.
I love that reel by the way.
After fishing the 2 winstons I have (4,8) I would definitely buy another one. I’ve also tried to decide 10 or 12 but just can’t pull the trigger. Oh well, it gives me something to think about.
I caught a bunch of jacks this year in Florida on my 8 and other than starting out on a loose drag and gradually tightening it down, I didn’t feel it was stessing my gear any worse than normal.
