I’m new to Charleston and have been really enjoying the trout bite over the past month. Throwing plastics a lot as well as catching them on my fly rod. I caught 12 today on fly in less then 2 hours. Found where the big ones live last week. Caught at least 10 fish over 18" . 22" was the biggest.
No, the big ones were caught on jig-head and DOA shrimp and gulp shrimp. I’ve been fishing creeks with the fly rod and have caught up to 16". These fish have not been very picky, I tie my own flies and have been successful with just about anything I’ve thrown. Getting down deep has been the key.
Fly rod and trout are FUN. I went out today, the bite was not as strong and the wind was howling. Great practice casting the fly rod into a heavy wind. I caught 5 on fly, 12-14" average.
I found a few “go to” spots. I throw a jig and if they are home I switch to my fly rod. I have literally thrown the jig once, got a hit and switch. I really enjoy fly fishing. I moved here from TN where I fished rivers for rainbows and brownies. I’ve caught a handful of reds on the fly rod. My next goal is to figure out the spring redfish bite. This is a beautiful area and and fun place to figure out.
