I’m gonna be staying at a buddy’s house this Friday night (won’t get up there til 6 or so) and while he does have a boat…we will probably keep it on the dock in the cove (on Gilbert side) just hanging out.
I’d like to toss out the rods and see what happens…any advice for me as far as what kind of setup to use, bait, and how to fish 'em?
Thanks!
id’ try some cut fresh herring on the bottom…your best shot off a dock will be getting catfish, but if you go with herring there’s always a chance of a striper picking it up too…a carolina rig (egg sinker above a barrel swivel->leader->hook)
if you want to be able to cast way out, keep the leader short (maybe 12")and it will be easier to cast
good luck

agree…carolina rig with cut bait.

Throw a couple live ones out on the bottom as well. Might be tough catching with the cold front just passing. But its not always about catching i guess. Have fun
Edited to add: try some chicken livers for cats.

hmm…Carolina Rig. Never would have thought to use a Carolina Rig with live bait…I’ve always used a CR with artificial worms and only seen it done that way. I’m guessing I’d just need a small amount of bait, or else it seems like (to me) that you wouldn’t be able to get the “action” you normally would.
Gonna try some herring on the bottom as well…see what happens. Just want to have a few rods out while we sit around and tell lies and maybe drink a beer or seven.
Thanks guys
in response to tritton’s post. i gave him some beef liver that i had when we butchered a cow and just because he cannot catch a fish he somehow thinks that something is wrong with the bait. LOL LOL. he did inform me however that at least the liver stayed on the hook. i really think that it may have some good merits but i have not tried it on the catfish yet. been too busy CATCHING MANY,MANY crappie. tritton; thanks for the commercial. i may just start marketing this beef liver in a jug bait. LOL LOL
I tried beef liver and could not get a hit. It did stay on good though. One of my “buddies” put chicken liver in my empty minnow bucket one summer. I realized it the next day at lunch when I could smell my car from 100 yds away. I have have never seen so many flies.
yeah tom; i don’t know if it will catch fish either but what the heck; worth a try. maybe try it in a pond that has catfish and see. of course that could be taken as shooting over a baited field. my son went out this morning for a couple of hours throwing against the bank for crappie up around captains choice marine but had no luck and finally decided that it was too cold around 11:00. could have told him that at 6 this morning. might go tommorrow back up the river. if anybody is interested give me a call. 331-8873
