Night fishing

Does anyone around here fish around dock lights at night? Was looking at some forums down in the gulf and see reports all the time of folks catching reds and trout at night on top water around docks with lights. I have seen while gigging tons of bait fish congregate around my lights, maybe the water is just more clear there so it works better? Just curious

Also, anybody shark fish from boats at night?

Love fishing @ night, ESP when it’s summer hot. Not abundant lights but there are some. Black has always been a great color for me, especially top water. Try the obvious industrial areas…they have lights like a runway and are often overlooked.

Careful, in some areas there’s a potential for nightfishing to be problematic. A bunch of counselors were having a speck ‘tournament’ fishing around the lights on the pier at the camp I work at in NC and out of nowhere the Marine Police comes up and threatens to write us all tickets for “spotlight fishing”. I’d never heard of those laws even existing before.

Nonetheless, I love night fishing and I’ve caught some solid reds at night around docks.

I’m very interested in this as well. I just moved to Beaufort and I now have a small dock on a tidal creek and wanted to set something up. When people are fishing “dock lights”… are they referring to a regular light shining on the water or some type of submerged lights? Or should I say… what’s the best setup to go for if I want to attract some fish?

Thanks for the replies. It’s usually easier for me to get out at night, go figure

BT…put your light about 5’ off the water, rig it with some astronomical power/light output and send me gps coordinates!

I’ve fished the underwater lights and it seems they shut down after I catch one fish, don’t know whether it makes a more visual commotion or what. I do like those lights that sit about 5 or 6’ off the water but there are a lot of good lights that are 8 to 10’ up. Like the white lights better than the yellowish ones. Love some flyrod trout under the lights…

Thanks for the info. I’m in Beaufort off of battery creek and my little creek goes completely dry. I will give the lights a shot and see what happens. You’re definitely welcome to come sit on the dock with me and give it a go.
