Night fishing

I work rotating shift work and once a month i have a transition period from swing to mids shift. during spring/summer months i would go night fishing from 11pm to about 8am to reset my sleep cycle for the following week. during those months i would destroy the reds buy soaking some fresh caught finger mullet before the sun came up on the banks between docks. i havent been out this time of year but if the weather isnt too cold i would like to in the next couple weeks.

does anyone have any experience or advice night fishing inshore, on a boat, during the winter months? looking for any advice on types of locations, bait/rig setups or if its even worth it and im just going to catch a cold.

Rockfish can be caught in the Cooper at night this time of year.Try around docks with lights from goose Creek on up to the power lines.

I might give that a shot, what do they like to eat?

I’ve always found them to be a strong flavored fish. Growing up Dad would scale them and cut into steaks, batter and fry or scale em and score then bake them in the oven with butter and lemon.

The last I had were hybrid out of a pond and we filleted and cubed then steamed and put lemone/butter over it. Tasted kind of like mock lobster.

the only part that makes the striper (rockfish) a “strong flavor” is the red meat behind the skin. trim that off, and it wont have a strong flavor.

What he said ^^^^^…If you will cut that blood line out when the fish is filleted…striper is a very mild, firm and flaky fish. One of my favorites.

Yep. What they said. Get the red meat out and it’s one of the best fish you’ll have.

Just a personal opinion, if you catch riverene striper in the cooper to please not eat them, but release them. They are an awesome gamefish and yet its very rare to find one above the slot. Coincidence? I don’t think so. I’d love to see them multiply in numbers to have great fishing for them in the future like it used to be in the 70s and 80s (per stories from Ralph). Not intending to scold you for keeping what’s legal, I’m just planting seeds.

Work the inshore shallow where you can walk the bank with a cork and a mud minnow about 8" line below the cork… great at night for trout and flounder. Get on a dock and let it float with the tide shallow also works.
