Went on a cruse sunday and lost a motor i noticed my RPM gauge jumping and falling about 500RPM then total loss it almost sounded like my battery wouldnt turn the motor over but i still had plenty of power to the speakers may be a wiring problem not sure though.
Anyone have any recommendations on a nissan outboard guy that wont kill my bank account?
x2 on fathon that marine little pricey for parts but only close nissan mechs that work on tohatshu and nissan motors alot. I would buy a nissan repair manual (seloc) for $30 bucks at westmarine and do some reading before you take it to someone. Could save yourself some time and money like leetke said could be a bad battery or ground loose.
You can also try Robins Marine, They have shop in Garden City & I think his son has one in georgetown. I recently bought a Motor from Robin (Garden City) & he really treated me good. He deals with Nissan & Tohatsu, cheapest prices on news I found. http://robinsmarine.com/
Ohh by the way if you don’t mind a shade tree guy I can recommend a standup guy in Rockhill SC. I started using him & since he has no overhead for shop he is a lot cheaper & so far I have had no problems with him. Might be alittle too far for you though???
yea rockhill would be quite a haul. thanks though, as soon as i get time to run back to charleston i am going to test the battery and move from there. Really seems funny bc it acted/ sounded like a battery problem but would crank the radio(attached to the same battery) no problem but then again a dead cell could be the cause.
No luck this weekend replaced the batteries and checked the wires. thought i was good to go after i put in i got on plane and it was running good then the motor shut off. It will run in neutral idle, reved up, and when in gear at slow speeds.
When it starts to die does it kind of sputter out & then die like running out of gas?? If so I had a boat with an in hull tank that did that. It ended up being the anti siphon valve in the fuel line near the tank. It prevents fire from going thru the fuel line into the gas tank. Took it off & knocked out the little ball valve inside of it with a scre driver & hammer so it was a staright pipe & it run perfect. Got another one to replace it of course.
ill have to check that reeldrag, New updates i noticed #3(bottom) cylinder is misfiring at idle but disappears when throttle is applied. Thought it may have been a coil going bad so i switched coils and still had the same issue yesterday i compression tested the motor 128, 133, 133. pulled the carb on the cylinder in question looks to be all ok no trash in the carb or gunk, all jets clear of obstruction. When in the water it idles at 900-1000RPM which is normal when out of water with earmuffs on it idles around 2000 and was randomly raising and lowering lowest was 1400 highest was 2500. Boat has 2 motors so i can see what is normal as the other runs great. any other suggestions?? i need help here as id really hate to cancel my 4th plans as every shop i can find has at least a 3week wait.
I did the full disassembly on the carb that i pulled, looking for something i was hoping was trash but it was clean as a whistle. I do have fuel water separators for each motor. yesterday i drained the one attached to the trouble motor Both motors are on one tank. Cracker, actually no i have not… Good Idea… guess that one completely passed me by! I was just so baffled when it happened since one weekend it was great and the next it had a mind of its own
actually come to think of it i do not have a inline filter besides the fuel water separator. spark plugs look good but i will go ahead and change them just to eliminate a variable. Anyone else have any possible ideas?
If you haven’t replaced the filter, do that next. They will absorb only a certain amount of water and then they get clogged and won’t pass gasoline.
If both motors are on one common tank, it’s not the vent line. Also might be the primer bulb. They have a check valve in them that are prone to failure.

I changed the fuel water separator still no luck at idle it my RPMs are still jumping up and down slowly. a guy at work mentioned that it could be my CDI box going bad which is something i know absolutely nothing about he mentioned that it could be the cause for all my issues. Is this probable? if so is there a way i can test it… or what it looks like so i can find it?
