"No bottom fishing" zones coming in 70 FEET!!!

The more bottom we have, the better fishing will be.

If we get legislation to allow private (but controlled/clean) reef deployment, in 15 years the bottom fishing could be unbelievable off of our coast.

The problem is going to be SAFMC realizing that the NC/SC/N-GA fishery doesn’t need to be managed the same way as S-Fl.

Also when the stock increase occurs, the current line of thinking for our SAFMC would be that too many fish are being caught and they need to shut down the fishery.

My goal is to get involved so that we have true fisherman involved with decision making rather than career politicians.

Hopefully, eventually, we can make a difference.

Are the ones you are talking about Skinne not privately built…?

Redstripe, from my understanding area 51 & 53 were privately(secretly) build, but tax funded.

This is a company that operates out of Alabama.

51 and 53 were built by dnr using grant money. They were constructed for research to study recruitment and movement patterns between reefs. Skinee has a really good idea to build reefs without publishing the locations. It would be good for the resource ands demonstrates that we don’t need mpa’s.

Doesn’t matter which arm of the govt. supplied the funds, It’s still taxpayer funded. Last time I checked, neither Fed or State govt. works a 40 hour week to make a dime of the money they spend. It all comes from taxpayers…Just sayin.

Thanks for posting skinnee. We need to follow Alabamas lead and allow the public to build/dump approved reef objects in certain areas. Pick a huge area of sandy bottom and let us make our own reefs at will. The politics and bs within S.C. is sickening. The secret area spots are good but we could make far better spots if the rules allowed an approved concrete object to be piled and dumped in approved areas. As we all know from the current primaries…our govt is a joke and the over regulation is strangling the growth of this country

Screw em…Time for private reefs. Everyone just take some rubble to your favorite area everytime you go. Throw in a washing machine with concrete in it once in awhile. …ha ha…

Private Grants or Federal Grants?

Yes I believe we all agree that a LOT more reefs would have huge benefits for our fisheries. Not publishing the locations would do even more to help, then let private citizens make some as well.

The SAFMC has announced 51&53 for closure. The taxpayers paid for these reefs - and they were not cheap to build

Now they want us to stay away .

Its like building a public park with public dollars and not telling us where it is - and then closing it incase we do find it.

Please release the GPS numbers

I wish I had the numbers. I do have approximate corners I will publish here later. Maybe someone can look around and find a part of 51 before the closure. 51 was built in 1997 and dnr was supposed to publish the numbers after three years. They obviously did not follow through on the permit as it was issued. It seems dnr has decided to get into the business of closing public waters to fishing by the tax payers and license holders that fund them. Their job is to enhance fishing and hunting opportunities for the citizens and visitors to S C, not use public funds to deny access to public waters.

Area 51 has four corners 1.5 x 1.5 nautical miles. The approximate corners are north west 79 28.500 x 32 35.060. South west is same longitude x 32 34.000. North east corner is 79 27.500 x 32.35.000. South east is same longitude x 32 34.000. Please let everyone know if you find the structures. It needs to be raped before dnr robs us of 3 square miles of productive bottoms. Scientist know lots about studies but nothing about actual best practices. That’s why safmc is so full of it in their “management” of resources. Full of book learning and no common sense.

I’m sick of the gov taking away my rights.

Here is a scientific study about these areas and their growth over time as well if anyone is interested.

so (like everyone else I’m sure) I immediately plugged those numbers into my chartplotter program…

Turns out there is already a plotted fish haven there. I guess the numbers may not have been publicly advertised but not exactly “secret” either. Doesn’t give exact location of structure, but shouldn’t be hard to find with some sonar searching.

This proposed closure part of the recent SAFMC meeting, correct? When does the closure go into effect, or is a final ruling still pending?

That was a pretty neat read. Looks like we need many many more artificial reefs built. I’d donate money.

I've got the approximate locations to both sites. If this nonsense continues and they pass, there will usually be like a 30-45 day window from the time they write it into the federal register until the law actually goes into effect. If that does happens, I will post the coordinates on this website so that taxpayers can have their way with these spots before they are permanently closed.

Are these reefs now officially closed to fishing?

I think the Trump adminstration recently signed the paper work so I believe they are
officially “no take”
