No Ethanol free gas in MP...how about Star Tron...

Seems there’s no pure gas sold in MP anymore.

Where’s the best place to pick up some Star Tron for outboards…I believe there’s a special kind for marine use. Does Walmart carry it or is that a marina item…?

Yes, Wal-Mart has it.
Charleston Marine carries it also…

Exxon on the corner of Ladson Rd. and Dorchester sells ethanol free gas for those in Summerville. I went in to thank/encourage the manager, she was very knowlegable on the subject. She said they will have ethanol free gas there for the forseable future. They have a different supplier than the most of the other Exxons in town.

I hear all this stuff about ethanol. I have been running Texaco gas (from that new station on Hwy 41 in Mt. P) for well over a year now with no problems.

I use the boat a lot so the fuel never really sits long. Just curious why some people have so much trouble and others have not at all. Trust me I am not complaining. I have enough other problems…

What’s better Star Tron marine or the Sta-bil marine formula?

We have not seen a lot of members that actually need assistance due to ethanol problems. Maybe the problem isn’t always bad enough to keep them from getting back, or maybe members are doing a good job preventing problems from it. Sure there are some, but not as many as you may think.

Our outboard boat has not had any issues with it, but that’s probably because we go through a lot of gas. So far, a treatment has not been necessary. It seems that the main issues with ethanol gas are shelf life and moisture. These two products claim to extend the shelf life of ethanol gas (even ethanol free has a shelf life). Sea Tow endorses Star Tron, and a rebate is available for members.

The Yamaha 4-Stroke manual says 10% ethanol gas is fine, but NOT methanol.

The major headaches from ethanol I’m reading about seem to come from older fuel tanks with varnish/crud buildups. Ethanol is a solvent that loosens/dissolves that stuff, which then bypasses and/or clogs 10 mic filters. The stuff that gets thru then raises havoc with engine filters …

If you have a single outboard, get a tank fitting and disconnect the hose from the motor, put the tank fitting on the end and pump out a quart of gas if the boat has been sitting for a while and see what it looks like. I have an I/O with a kicker and a tank with dual pickups, so I do it on the kicker fuel line. It just pays to know what’s in your tank…and if you see water or crud you can pump some out before it goes into your filters. Also check your filter contents when you change them.
