I was wondering if y’all wear gloves when casting? When I go, I do it at a bare minimum of equipment, ie cooler w/ ice, net, latern, and cigar, and I go from a dock or shore. I’ve noticed that my hands tend to get quite shrivled after casting for 3 or 4 hours. I have enough caluses on my hands from manual labor and weight lifting, but I figure if I wore gloves, they may not be as sore the next day. I wasn’t sure if anybody did this, and if so, is it worth doing?
gloves, all the way. I use a pair of mechanics gloves with the thin, smooth leather palm. Keeps shrimp spines and slime out and protects from the abrasion of the net and salt, sensitive enough to throw the net, pick up shrimp, etc w/ no issues. I usually even wear them to head the shrimp. Take them off when you’re not casting to let your hands dry out.
Call me what you want, but after using them, I won’t touch a net or a shrimp without 'em when I have a choice! Hands will feel wayyyy better the next day.
I do love this too “sensitive enough to throw the net” sounds like a Condom commercially. Not trying to offend you just getting enjoyment from your post. Thanks, lots of bad juice from the shrimp plus there horns poke ya, my son can not touch them without his skin peeling. Gloves just get in my way and yes my wife really does wear them when she goes or helps head. Good luck
I use the fabric ones with rubber on the palms and fingers. I’m not calloused…hands or otherwise…and they do help with pulling the rope. I leave em on to head, too.
i use those from harbor freight. they are under two bucks. yellow pvc vinyl on one side and cloth grey on the other. cannot beat them. when heading i use the surgical gloves. keeps the iodine from staining and a lot quicker to head the shrimp. i tend to work smarter not harder.
I wear th em to protect my hands…even the rubber ones keep them from blistering…last thing a nurse wants is open places on your hands. I wear them heading shrimp too…use a pair and then look at the color on them afterwards from the guts and stuff…it’s got to be better for your hands
don’t make me dig out the infected shrimp thumb photos again. i wish i had some gloves 2 years ago. luckily it was a common bacteria and not one of the marine bacteria that could have led to months of iv antibiotics, surgery or loss of limb. nasty. 5 doctors, 3 weeks, lots of money and medicine. mike
Wow, thanks for the insight, didn’t expect this many posts. I guess it may be worth at least trying it out. I usually wear gloves when I am taking fish off the hook, helps me grip better.
I use Nitrile gloves. They hold up well and keep the salt water, etc. off the skin. I also use them while making bait balls and while handling them. Been using gloves for many years with no bad side effects. so far
