No love, Sullivans. Cold, and marine battery toast

Took my boy to Sullivans today. It was chilly, but not too bad. Wind was a good bit more than forecasted. Just remember that the weather forecast has a disclaimer at the bottom that says “For Entertainment Purposes Only”.

Anyhow, we only had one hookup all morning… was on a curlytail grub. It fought like a redfish (hard initial run) but spit the hook after the first run.

Shortly after that, I realized my trolling motor wasn’t kicking us around like it should (was all we had with us today, we stayed up in the creeks and close to the ramp). Normally I can fish all day long on that battery but NOT today. It was fresh off the charger, all cells were filled with water, and battery not even 8 months old.

The only real highlight of the day was my son getting to see living squid for the first time, we caught 3 small ones (jalapeno pepper size) in the cast net. Going to be food for my aquarium fish.

We limped back to the launch, loaded up and went home and cooked some fish we had in the freezer. All in all a fun day.

Beware Walmart batteries. I can’t fathom why this one just suddenly crapped, it had a full charge according to my charger (and according the indicator idiot lights on my trolling motor). Apparently I lost a cell. The strange thing is, the voltage reads 12.4v, which should indicate around 70% charge, but that was after sitting for an hour and a half in the truck. In reality, in the river, the battery wouldn’t even keep the Garmin fish finder running. The trolling motor would stall out if you put it on anything over 3/4 power.

I’m charging it overnight on a 15A charger that is capable of de-sulfating a battery if it detects that it needs it. When I get home from church tomorrow, I’ll put the motor in a 55g drum and run it on wide open to see how long it goes.

matt, are those batteries made by Exide?

EverStart/Neverstart. Not sure if Exide just rebrands them for Walmart.

Take it back and let them replace it. Should have a spot on it with month and year stamp.

That’s the only good thing about Walmart batteries. No questions return policy.

Yeah, it definitely has the date stamp on it. Gonna swap it out this week but I can’t say I’m easy about that. When I have the outboard running (it’s getting a new head gasket this week) then we depend on the trolling motor as our back up. Our outboard is really old lol so I’m not easy about having a marine battery I can’t trust.

Sorry about all the grief, Matt. That had to be a little disconcerting with the boy along.

It could have been, but I am always prepared for such an event. If we only have the trolling motor, we never go more than about a mile from the boat launch, we are always in a protected area that’s somewhat busy (we could just anchor, fish, and wait for help if needed) and I have a set of oars and oar locks on our boat. It’s actually pretty easy to row it even against a modest current because of the hull shape. I rowed a 16 foot version of my boat A LOT as a teenager on my aunt’s big lake.

Won’t stop me from trying again. Next fishing trip will probably be chasing some crappie down on the GCR.

Be weary of just running it in a trash can of water to see how long it will last…there wont be any load on it just running like that not pullin any weight, could give you a false sense of available juice

That’s a good point, I guess the rotation of the water will not be a proper load on it. I’ll take it to the GCR and troll for crappie and see what happens. I have a head gasket in hand for my outboard so when I get it fixed, I won’t have to worry as much about the potential for rowing.

Hey I live right around the corner from the Res! I’ll pm you my number and if you have any serious issues and/or need to be rescued you can call or text!

That’s awesome thanks! Fortunately, unless the wind is crazy, my boat will actually row quite easily. I carry a set of oars and oarlocks just in case lol.

One day I’m going to row it, just for fun, from one end to the other. May take my wife out there for a romantic afternoon when it warms back up. Gotta wash the pluff mud stains out of it first lol, it looks like a professional crabber has been living in it.
