Took my boy to Sullivans today. It was chilly, but not too bad. Wind was a good bit more than forecasted. Just remember that the weather forecast has a disclaimer at the bottom that says “For Entertainment Purposes Only”.
Anyhow, we only had one hookup all morning… was on a curlytail grub. It fought like a redfish (hard initial run) but spit the hook after the first run.
Shortly after that, I realized my trolling motor wasn’t kicking us around like it should (was all we had with us today, we stayed up in the creeks and close to the ramp). Normally I can fish all day long on that battery but NOT today. It was fresh off the charger, all cells were filled with water, and battery not even 8 months old.
The only real highlight of the day was my son getting to see living squid for the first time, we caught 3 small ones (jalapeno pepper size) in the cast net. Going to be food for my aquarium fish.
We limped back to the launch, loaded up and went home and cooked some fish we had in the freezer. All in all a fun day.
Beware Walmart batteries. I can’t fathom why this one just suddenly crapped, it had a full charge according to my charger (and according the indicator idiot lights on my trolling motor). Apparently I lost a cell. The strange thing is, the voltage reads 12.4v, which should indicate around 70% charge, but that was after sitting for an hour and a half in the truck. In reality, in the river, the battery wouldn’t even keep the Garmin fish finder running. The trolling motor would stall out if you put it on anything over 3/4 power.
I’m charging it overnight on a 15A charger that is capable of de-sulfating a battery if it detects that it needs it. When I get home from church tomorrow, I’ll put the motor in a 55g drum and run it on wide open to see how long it goes.
