No Power to motor

Yesterday i tried to get my outboard to crank to no avail. Can anyone help with a starting point? I have no power to the motor whatsoever no tilt/trim or response from key switch. I bypassed the battery switch and straight wired the motor to the battery hoping the switch went out but had no luck. any advice would be appreciated!

Sounds like you need to get the multimeter out and check power and ground wires. Sounds like it will be pretty easy to find.
Where is the boat located? If its not too far, you can probably find a volunteer to come help out for a few beers. I might have some free time this weekend, but I’m out towards ravanel.

Start by checking the battery voltage and make sure the cables are tight and not corroded at the battery. Follow the power and ground with your meter until you find where the break is. If I had to guess, I bet it is a loose connection or a flat dead battery.

Might be a fuse or circuit breaker on the main battery cable.

Have you done any work/maintenance/additions since it had power and started last?

Probably not recommended, but you could always use jumper cables and hook straight from battery to starter/ground and see if that’ll start it. Still not sure why trim wouldn’t work, make sure ground wire has good connection on block, and battery has juice.

Muddywater thanks for the offer but i am over an hour away in orangeburg. Ill see if i can get my hands on a multimeter this week but. No maintenance or additions since i put it up. I did get out there this weekend and traced wires under the console and switched the ignitions from motor to motor and still no luck. I was able to jump the solenoid which engaged the starter but not the flywheel i still have no tilt or trim from the key switch though. Today Ill get out there and start tracing wires on the motor to see if i can find a bad connection or blown fuse.

Assuming the ‘jump’ was a quality connection from battery to starter (solenoid is not in the picture), if the starter did not spin strong enough to throw the starter gear into the flywheel or it was not strong enough to spin the flywheel, I’d bet you have a weak/bad battery. Could be a bad starter. But, since the symptoms are wider than just the starter, I’d guess weak/dead battery.

Note that electric motors (trim/tilt and starter) use a lot more amperage than any of the other power draws (e.g. lights, radio, etc.). The starter motor will need several hundred amps to turn the flywheel well. The trim/tilt motor will require far less, but, still more than lights and radio and such. A weak or nearly dead/bad battery could easily power those smaller draws and be nowhere close to strong enough to power the electric motors.

Get the battery load tested. Not just a multi-meter voltage check. A bad battery can produce 12v and be absolutely incapable of producing any amperage. The only way to tell if the battery is truly good is to put it on a charger and charge it all the way. Then, get it load tested. Most auto parts places will test the battery for free.

After getting out there yesterday i came to the conclusion that i am popping the 20A fuse. I am not sure why though. The Battery is a little on the low side though but it does have plenty enough to run and trim the other motor.
