No snakes?

Just visiting the yakers and noticed somebody saying that there were no snakes in saltwater. Please, do not think this. Gigging for flounder the other night we saw either a coral snake( probably deadly in a kayak far from other people) or a king snake (harmless but whos dumb enough to check in the dark)swimming in the wando. We were not from the harbor so it was definitly saltwater. They dont drink it. They just use it to get around and cool off.

I agree, there are snakes in the ocean. When I was a teenager, a large rattlesnake came floating by in an old mat of grass. This was at Edisto Beach in the early 60’s. Lots of gators out there too.

Not to mention the 12ft gator I saw in the North Edisto last weekend. Bet that’ll make you need to change the ole pants. Shoot, I hit the gas in my 14ft jon boat.

There are no species of snakes that live in the saltwater in these parts, it is possible to see one of our land species swimming from island to island or floating on a raft of grass. The main reason that snakes nor alligators can “live” in saltwater has to with their lack of a mechanism for excreting salt. The longer they stay in saltwater the more salt they absorb and the more water they lose. Salt migrates from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration, ever wondered why you get thirsty after swimming in the ocean?
