If is not one thing it is another. I just replaced the fuel pump and it fired up for 2 seconds and then quit like I pulled the kill switch. I attempted to start it and primed the fuel pump, but I got nothing. After a while, I decided it was not a fuel problem and decided to check the spark. I used my “in-line” spark indicator and saw NO SPARK while my son turned the key…I decided to try the old fashion way pulled the spark plug out and grounded it to the power head to make sure it was not the spark indicator…NO SPARK. I did this to all three cylinders and saw NO SPARK!!! I replaced the “kill switch” two months ago (not cheap by the way…but that is the price for safety). I don’t want to rule it out, but I don’t think that is it…does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong and what to check. Thanks!.
I’d guess coil. You can check and see if you have the right voltage on both sides of the coil (in and out) If you have the right voltage going in and nothing coming out you know its the coil. If you have a book on your motor it should show you how to trouble shoot an ignition problem. If not you can probably google it
check your stator or rectifier aswell, 96 evinrude had the same problem and these are why i wasnt getting spark.
that motor is going to be brand new by the time you’re done with it!

unplug the big red harness on the side of the motor
jump a wire from the yellow wire on the solenoid to the red battery cable wire, and check your spark again
make sure the plug wires are unpplugged, because if it starts, you wont be able to shut it off
@ Chris V… I am not a system expert, so what will that tell me? My guess it will tell me that I have a bad ignition switch since the cabeling from the side control goes to the big red harness. Do you know how to test the “power pack”? I don’t think it is a coil problem because I don’t think all three coils would go bad a one time (I could be wrong though…wierd stuff always happens to me). Thanks for all your help in advance!

lets start with the harness
if your spark comes back with the harness unplugged, you have an issue in the boat, not the motor
then we will try and find that problem
@ Chris V, I pulled the harness and jumped the yellow wire to the battery cable coming into the starting soleniod. I pulled a spark plug and grounded it to the power head and still NO Spark. We have narrowed it down to the motor. Will you help me and let me know what the next step is? Thanks!!

What about the power pack?.. Had to replace this recently. Lightning can ruin one just sitting in your yard. Expensive part, but easy install on my 1991 70 Johnson
@ Chris V, Thanks for all your help. I narrowed it down to the power pack. It runs better than it ever has before. It cranked up cold without the choke…I can’t believe it.
@ Fish Whistle, thanks for your response, I had ordered it shortly before your response, so thanks for the reassurance b/c I was hoping that I didn’t buy a $100.00 paper weight.

Hey not much you can do as far as diagnostic for the power pack. My engine just wasnt running right as it started to go out. Then suddenly it just didnt want to fire up. It was a def risk, but once replaced everything was good as new. The ol johnson runs like a top right now
