no turkeys but saw lots of deer

walked in by moonlight to set up this morning by 6AM. When it got light I looked around and there were probably a dozen deer standing around. I got one gobbler to respond to my call but never came close enough to see him. When deer season starts I’ll probably see a bunch of turkeys.

That is always the way it goes.
Saw tons of turkeys all hunting season.
Saw one jake this morning. Came within 10 yds.

Sounds like us this a.m. saw several does slipping into our setup in the swamp and only heard one bird that gobbled only after he flew down, came within 65 yards and hung up in full strut for 20 minutes and demanded that we come to him. Guess how this story ended, just like last week the one hen that hates any competition comes in again and deep into the swamp they go.

Too bad my grandson just turned seventeen. I rode down to Wilsons Landing just to see if anything was going on. I saw three hen turkeys crossing the road on the way there, one in the woods when I got out of the truck, and two more on the way back home. I’ve seen hens the past three times I’ve driven down there between Harrys and Wilsons Landing. The area is youth only.
