While on the lake Friday, in to separate locations, other boats fishing in the same vicinity, would hit/slap the side or floor of the boat, is this a technique to draw bait fish or stripers?
It is called “drumming” and you can read about it here. http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=102063

With deep down rod and spoon fishing, I find most days that if I’m not drumming, I’m not catching. I have an aluminum baseball bat I relentlessly wear out on the floor behind my console:sunglasses: There are many theories as to why this works. To me, stripers make low pitched drumming sounds with their air bladders when schooled up and feeding. Someone on one of these boards shared an audio file years back. They are very competitive fish and are drawn to drumming and thumping, trying to get a piece of the action they perceive:smiley:
One time on Lake Cherokee, a local guy we encountered in another boat said,“We knew yall was from South Kakalaki. All that (**() racket on the bottom of the boat!!” He saw us boat several nice fish and still wouldn’t do it???

There was a guide at the towers the other day drumming. I thought he was just an idiot. Lol. Never knew this was a technique. One thing is for sure it will decrease your competition as I couldn’t hang around it. Let alone on the boat with it.

I use an old pool que.the end with rubber on works perfect.it doesn’t do any damage to the boat floor,an old walking cane walking cane works also.
Does drumming only work in lakes? Will it work on river stripers too?
I never drum when fishing less that 30 feet of water. Unlike deep fish, shallow fish can be skittish.

I was told yesterday that ther was an electronic Drummer available that changes the drumming speed and sequence as it emits the noise, anyone have a source for this gadget?
My opinion on chumming in the river is that it will bring in fish but big fish are typically lazy and if there is a good flow of water they are gonna sit tight and let the good flow to them. I wouldnt think they would work up the chum line to your baits. If there was no current I could see it working just fine.
