Got a chance to fish Lake Erie today with a buddy who has a charter. Wind blew us off the lake mid day. Waves breaking over the thirty foot Sportsman. Seven foot waves all day. Tough to fish twelve lines in that. We did manage five fish to include a 30" that I caught. Any walleye over 28" qualifies for the Fish Ohio recognition.
A great trip with some old friends but I did keep thinking we were going to see Gilligan and the Skipper. Had that three hour cruise feel to it after a while.
Not sure if there are any in SC or not. Walleye and yellow perch are my two favorite fresh water fish to eat. Can’t wait to get back to Ohio this fall for perch trip.
Congrats on the nice 'eyes! Y’all did real well considering the waves.
Growing up on Lake Erie - I am very familiar with both walleye and yellow perch. September is when the jumbo perch run - lots of days with 50+ perch over 12 inches - YUM Striper and Walleye are great eating - but yellow perch is still my favorite fresh water fish.
Also familiar with the wind and waves. Many times we fished jigs and weight-forward spinners for walleye and smallmouth in 5 foot waves. If you want to fish Erie regularly, you learn how to deal with the waves. On the bright side - I don’t get seasick
The church I grew up in is on the waterfront in Lorain OH. The “new” church was built in the late 1950’s, and recently had to take down the BRICK and LIMESTONE block bell tower as it had become twisted by the years of steady NW gales and was a threat to collapse.
Here’s a funny story. I worked the B.A.S.S. Elite weigh-in on Murray in May 2008. Very windy day with white caps on Murray. Chewing the fat with tournament director before the boats came to weigh-in and got to talking about the wind. He said the pros like to fish in the wind - but the only tournament BASS gets nervous about is whenever they go to Erie. He said BASS has only ever lost one boat in a tournament - and it was on Erie. It was a Ranger to boot! The same one Forrest Wood himself stands on - full of water with the bottom cut out to prove it is unsinkable! Well - turns out Erie swallowed one
I say the three biggest exports from Canada are beer, hockey players and cold fronts!
Enjoy the 'eye fillets! Sure hope you guys fill the cooler with yellow perch come fall!
SS, my dad used to catch a lot of walleyes in Hartwell 25 years ago! Haven’t seen or heard of one in ages don’t what happened to them? Mabe the stripers ate them all!
