Noob tying questions

  1. What is the spring for on the tying vise?

  2. Will an unweighted muddler minnow pattern float like a topwater?

Thanks in advance

1 - It keeps a small cotter pin in place which aligns the stem of the vise. Be very careful not to shift that spring around too much or you could ruin a perfectly good vise.

Just kidding… when you have long materials you can use the spring to hold them out of the way. I don’t think it serves any other purpose.

As far as the muddler, it really all depends on what materials you use. It could end up in various parts of the water column.

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Yes. An unweighted deer hair (traditional) muddler floats. Until a redfish snaps it off the surface and drags it through the mud and grass! One of my favorite flies.

Ty -thats what I was thinking/hoping… a topwater deer hair muddler seems like a redfish and even trout killer. Kinda like pond popper fishing for bream - on steroids!

If I don't catch reds on a muddler then it just doesn't feel like I've had a good flyfishing season. Fortunately, I haven't had a bad flyfishing season, yet. Knock wood.

Lots of deer hair flies to choose from. That float! Muddler is as small as I use. When you get one to take a Dahlberg Diver, you might wet yourself.

you can also fish it as a floater, then rub pluff mud into 'er and she sinks.

Where can I buy this "pluff mud" you talk about?

OK guys, I had to try it. This is my first attempt at spinning deer hair. I think it turned out pretty good.
I don’t have a lot of materials yet. Only black buck tail. I used some feathers that I thought looked like a fish tail and some white plumes for, well, I don’t know why - just for extra motion I guess.
Looking forward to trying it out

What do you think?

Looks deadly.

Bet it floats.

Make sure you trim bottom of head close to hook shank, a razor works well, or you wont be able to hook the fish. Other than that, will work just fine!

Definitely not bad for your first time spinning deer hair! If anything, an LMB would hammer it.

Looks great. If you did it in all black it would a great night time topwater fly. Do you guys ever use chartreuse or orange dye for white tails?

On a side note, TyOneOn, just out of curiosity does the spaniel in your avatar ever contribute to any flies?

Thanks guys. Capt Newman, I took your suggestion and its better now. Its like giving the fly a shave

Use to. It's a tribute to a good old friend.

If you get a deer hair stacker and find the right tie point you can cut down on your trimming a whole lot …
