went out Sunday 9-28 around high tide and set poles. Very slow but it did pick up once the tide dropped a few feet. Dolphin were constant so that could have been the reason. Next time I’m bringing more bait. Ended with 1/4 cooler of mostly large with some jumbos.
What about a bull horn under water for the dolphin?
it a lure usually used for Largemouth bass fishing. It is hard plastic with hard bb’s inside of it. the Dolphins just don’t know what it is so they get away from it.
You can take the hooks off of it to make sure you don’t accidentally hook them, but they will bug-out once they feel an hear the commotion. Has been working for me on the flats for 10+ years. Any dolphin encroaching on a flat full of reds and trout in the late season will get the hint very quickly with a few good casts in their direction.
Dolphins are smarter than a lot of people I know… Highly doubt they will run your poles and eat the bait balls (balls of mud to them). Not saying they may not eat the shrimp (not one of their primary foods) but it would make more sense they are there for the fish the bait balls attract.
We got destroyed by dolphins on Sunday 9/28 as well. We looked up at one point and there must have been 10 playing slalom on the poles. It happens a lot up there. Good tip on the rattle trap. Will try that next time.
You haven’t shrimped long enough if you haven’t been robbed by flipper. Maybe they are in certain parts of SC. I’m going tomorrow/ Sat. and know they will be there. Normally I just shake my fist and say some sailor words, It doesn’t work, but I feel better. I am and heading out right now to get to pull out the Rattle trap and pull the barbs. Great tip.
